THE POSITION
Under the direction of a school administrator or designee, patrols school campus, parking areas, and adjacent areas to prevent unruly behavior and unsafe or illegal acts and to ensure the safety of students, staff, and property; enforces State laws and school and District rules and regulations.
CURRENT OPENING: Three 10 month/40 hours per week full-time positions and two 10 months/22 hours per week part-time positions. The tentative hours for the part-time position are from 3:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Salary placement will be on Range 17 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($21.83 per hour) of this salary range.

An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for 12 months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.
NOTE: Answers to the supplemental questions must be submitted with your application. A copy of your certificate of completion (Penal Code 832.2), or proof of enrollment in an approved School Security Training class, that is authorized and recognized by the State of California as meeting the SB1626 and ED. CODE 38001.5 must be submitted with your application. Proof of valid CA Driver License and car insurance must be submitted by the final test part. Essential Duties
The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
  • Patrols and monitors school campus, parking areas, and adjacent areas for unsafe conditions, hazards, illegal acts, suspicious activities, unauthorized persons, or other safety-related conditions or activities.
  • Maintains safety and security of school campus grounds and protects students, staff, and property.
  • Enforces State laws and school and District rules and regulations relating to smoking, truancy, tardiness, vandalism, parking, and other violations.
  • Counsels students, visitors, and District personnel on District rules and regulations and appropriate behavior.
  • Communicates with District personnel and law, fire and safety personnel/agencies to receive and exchange information related to security, vandalism, crimes, investigations and/or safety issues.
  • Contacts District Police Officers or law enforcement in emergency situations, to make arrests, or as appropriate.
  • Observes and checks students or visitors who appear to be loitering and are out of class and determines appropriate action.
  • Prepares written reports pertaining to Campus Security and assigned duties including, but not limited to, reports related to incidents, accidents, vandalism, theft, etc.
  • Responds to and investigates instances involving assault, fighting, battery, illegal substance use and other illegal acts occurring on District property and apply appropriate interventions.
  • Checks and secures alarms, doors, rooms, buildings and equipment; reports hazardous or unusual conditions or malfunctions observed.
  • Provides security and crowd control for extra-curricular school activities.
  • Directs and controls traffic on and around school campus as required.
  • Assists District Police Officers and law enforcement personnel in apprehending and detaining individuals as needed.
  • Responds to safety-related calls and provides assistance as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations and provides assistance as needed; assists injured or ill persons.
  • Operates security equipment, such as a motorized cart and a two-way radio.
  • Maintains a variety of records and files.
  • May administer emergency first aid.
  • May appear in court as a witness.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification stand, walk, may occasionally lift over 100 lbs. with assistance, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, have depth perception, color vision and can distinguish shades, see small details, and have vision correctable to 20/20.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work inside and outside, exposed to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.), in direct contact with the public, students, District personnel, and without direct supervision, potential physical hazards involved when intervening in anti-social, illegal, and violent behavior, possible fights, verbal and/or physical confrontations.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
No education is required.
Experience:
One year of experience working in the field of law enforcement or security.
Special Requirements:
  • Certification of completion of school Security Officer training course developed by the Bureau of Investigative Services of the Department of Consumer Affairs in consultation with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training in accordance with California Education Code Section 38001.5 (SB 1626).
  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license.
  • Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle that meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continues to maintain insurability.
  • First aid and CPR certificates are required within the first three months of employment (provided by the District).
  • May be required to work adjustable work schedules including evenings, weekend and holiday assignments.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

  • Complete Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (NCPI) training.

COVID Vaccine Requirement
Per Board policy, employees are allowed on District campuses or facilities only if they are fully vaccinated. This resolution applies to all applicants upon hire. Applicants are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination status to the Personnel Commission Office on the date of the examination. Applicants will not be allowed to take the examination without being fully vaccinated. People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completion of a vaccine.
General Information
The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of an application screening, initial screening of qualifications, documentation/certification screening, and in some instances supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.
The examination may consist of any combination of the following: training and experience evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on the eligibility list, which depending on the classification, may be in force for six months or one year.

Paid Holidays
Up to 16 holidays per year depending on months worked for all classified employees.
Paid Vacation
Vacation is prorated for all classified employees, based on the hours and months worked per year. Below is the vacation schedule for classified supervisors and classified staff.
Classified Employee Vacation Chart
1-5 years of service
  • One day of vacation will be earned per month worked.

6-10 years of service
  • One and one-quarter (1 ¼) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

11-15 years of service
  • One and one-half (1 ½) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

16-20 years of service
  • One and three-fourths (1 ¾) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

21 + years of service
  • Two (2) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

Health Benefits
For positions 35 hours or more per week the District contributes $12,900 (subject to change) toward annual premium for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. Partially paid benefits are available for part-time (20-34) hour employees. The District participates in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees.
