Job description

Who We Are
Since 1938, generations of campers have come to experience the joy and beauty of Camp Silver Creek. Located deep inside Oregon's Silver Falls State Park, historic Camp Silver Creek is a magical place for children and adults alike. Towering evergreens and a stream flow through the camp's four units. In the center of camp, a beautiful field is perfect for field games and the lake welcomes boaters, fishermen, and even the early morning polar bear swimmers. We are actively hiring great role models who are energetic, collaborative and hard working to join the team for this summer. Ready to make a difference and have the best summer of your life? We'd love to have you apply!
The Role In A Nutshell
We're looking for a Camp Director to lead and inspire our exceptional staff. You will be the liaison between the YMCA and Camp Silver Creek. Day to day operations, family and community communication, and finances will all be under your supervision. A leadership retreat will take place in either May or June, then this position will run from May 13th-September 6th.
A Typical Day (even though there's no such thing as a typical day at camp...)
  • Start the day with a Polar Bear announcement for early morning swimming
  • Join a cabin group for breakfast
  • Check-in with your leadership team to make sure everything is set for the day
  • Respond to all emails
  • Alert counselors to any parent communication or camper medication needs
  • Check in with Unit Directors to see if there are any issues to be addressed
  • Order supplies needed for the week
  • Communicate with the Camping Services Director about any needs or concerns
  • Open the camp store to deck the campers out with camp merch
  • Reach out to the state park about an upcoming event
  • Get to know the campers as the counselors take their breaks
  • Work with the Assistant Director of People to encourage and support staff when needed
  • Support a camper in the chill zone as they reset for the rest of the day
  • Monitor the campgrounds to make sure that all areas remain ACA compliant
  • Lead a song at campfire
  • Help cover a unit while the counselors enjoy an evening break
  • Get some sleep so you can come back and do it all again

All candidates must have reliable transportation. Job offers are contingent upon completion of a rigorous criminal history background check.
Requirements
This Job Might Be For You If:
  • You're a Role Model Staff and campers will look to you to lead by example. You'll always need to model exemplary behavior while also creating a safe and inclusive environment.
  • You're responsible. Whether it's making sure that supplies are ready when needed or making sure that all staff are actively supervising their campers, you are responsible for making sure that all campers are safe, supported and having fun.
  • You're a great listener. Campers will confide in staff when there are difficulties in their group. You'll need to hear all sides of the story and help resolve the conflict, so it doesn't pop up again. It's not always what you hear with your ears though - you'll need to pick up on nonverbal cues and body language to uncover issues that may be bubbling up beneath the surface.
  • You enjoy providing support and positive reinforcement. Campers can find themselves out of their comfort zone at camp. Whether it's reminding a camper to put on sunscreen or helping a scared camper overcome his fears on the archery range, you're always willing to offer a helping hand.
  • You're an excellent communicator and team player. You'll work with the counselors and all the leadership staff. You will report to the Camping Services Director. Making sure everyone is on the same page is crucial to providing a positive camp experience for all the campers.
  • You're calm under pressure. Things move a mile a minute at camp. When a problem arises, you'll need to be cool under pressure and spring into action to help solve it safely and efficiently.
  • You're open to feedback. Working with kids can be challenging, whether it's your first time or you're a seasoned veteran. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it - our leadership team has worked in the camping industry for years and is happy to support you.
  • You're willing to share your hidden talents with camp. Can you jump rope while balancing a cup of water on your head as you sing "Donut Shop" with perfect pitch? Know how to play the ukulele and harmonica? Campers love to see our staff members' hidden talents and we'd love to see yours too!
  • You will be 25 (required by ACA accreditation standards)
  • You have significant experience working with youth. We ask that you have 3-5 years of working with school-age children and/or have completed a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • You have supervisory experience. You have experience supervising a team of staff or peers.

Perks Of The Job
  • A competitive salary
  • A free YMCA membership that can be used nationwide (for the 9 months following camp)
  • A beautiful camp with lots of amazing places to explore
  • The opportunity to practice many of the top skills employers are looking for.
  • New friendships and memories that will last a lifetime
  • The chance to make a difference in a child's life

This job description may not be all inclusive and employees are expected to perform all other duties as assigned and directed by management. Job descriptions and duties may be modified when deemed appropriate by management.
