Job description

The Village of Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department is seeking interested candidates for the seasonal position of Camp Counselor for Camp Kiwanis. Under the direction and supervision of the Camp Supervisor, the Camp Counselor will assist with supervision of campers, ensuring their safety and fulfilling the goals of the camp. You will help with the day-to-day planning, organizing, and implementing of camp activities appropriate for children 5 years of age through 14. You will be responsible for guiding a group of campers through daily recreational activities like art projects, sports, play and games, swim days, and chaperoning field trips. You will take attendance/headcount of campers’ multiple times a day, maintain the cleanliness of camp areas, assist with setup and takedown of activities. The ability to clearly communicate in both written and oral fashions is essential to this position. Daily/hourly requirements for contact with children and parents require positive and value-oriented interactions to maintain the standards of the program and the professional image of the village. You are expected to act positively and professionally when working with coworkers, campers, and parents. This is an at-will position.


CAMP KIWANIS

K-3rd Grade (5-9.5yrs)

Kiwanis Camp offers children a traditional camp experience including group games, sports, skits, songs, stories, swimming, field trips, crafts, and team building activities. Campers are divided by age/grade groups.


PAY & HOURS

Hourly Wage: $14.00 - $16.00 DOQ

When: May 28, 2024 - August 9, 2024

Hours: 8:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., Monday - Friday


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Must be at least 16 years of age or older. No previous experience required. Knowledge in camp program area is strongly preferred. Comfortable with being in the water with camp participants.


DUTES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures and see that they are always adhered to.
  • Prepare and complete lesson plans for daily activities.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct indoor and outdoor activities gearing them to the needs of the various groups.
  • Assist the Camp Supervisor develop weekly lesson plans to cover basic activities for your group.
  • Supervises/chaperones a group on field trips and pool days.
  • Interact with the children in both one on one and group activities.
  • Plan and conduct a variety of “positive” program activities for all in the areas of; sports/games, arts-n-crafts, drama, music, dance, team building and special events.
  • Assist in record keeping by taking attendance, collecting permission slips, keep track of child’s emergency information, documenting any behavioral issues, and filling out accident/incident reports as needed.
  • Actively participate in pool rotation when at the pool.
  • Assist in keeping facility, supplies and equipment clean and safe by reporting breakage and safety problems immediately. Assist in clean-up and straightening up site before, during, and after each session.
  • Attend staff trainings as they pertain to policies and procedures, safety, or other subjects as appropriate.
  • Observe and follow all Village of Brookfield safety policies and regulations. The safety of the staff and patrons is a continuing responsibility of all staff members.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in finding a substitute when ill or absent.
  • Act as a substitute counselor as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and management.
  • Observe and follow all Village safety policies and regulations and report any hazardous situations. The safety of staff and participants is a continuing responsibility of all employees.
  • The department encourages its employees to “take pride and ownership” of the parks and recreation department. As such, it shall be the responsibility of all employees to pick up litter throughout the buildings, grounds, and facilities of the Village.
  • Must be able to work all hours based on department needs.
  • Attend various departmental staff training courses as they pertain to policies and procedures, safety, or other subjects as appropriate.

  • Ability to interact with children and teach them in a fun, interactive way.
  • Must be personable and comfortable speaking to children, parents, staff and public of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Possess good problem-solving skills and have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
  • Should possess enthusiasm, drive, and a desire to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Should be able to work in a team atmosphere, as necessary, promoting positive and effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to new situations.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism and/or supervision.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be able to follow directions and perform responsibilities as described.
  • Possess time management and organizational skills to effectively perform responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to represent the Village of Brookfield’s Parks and Recreation Department in a professional manner.
  • Employee must have good safety awareness and use good judgment in all aspects of this position.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Bending, kneeling, and reaching items off floor and shelves.
  • Physically able to participate in active games throughout the day. Able to demonstrate and participate in activities like games, singing, dancing, sports, and arts/crafts.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry up to 35 pounds in equipment or supplies from storage room.
  • Able to sit on the floor for sustained periods of time while interacting and playing games with the children.
      • Constant standing up and sitting down as necessary to accomplish daily activities.
      • Able to handle a pair of scissors to cut out patterns and draw simple art projects.
      • Able to go to the pool or playground area and supervise children in this area.
      • Employee’s general work area is indoors in a smoke-free environment with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting.
      • Employee will be required to work outside during various weather conditions, particularly during hot/humid temperatures.

All camp staff must complete the following trainings before the first day of summer camp: Trainings will be conducted at Village Hall before camp and online. Trainings are paid.

  • First Aid/CPR
  • HR/Safety Training
  • Pre-Camp Training (site-specific)
  • Mandated Reporter
  • PPE Training
  • SafeSport
  • Customer Service Training
  • Any additional specialty trainings
