Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker helps the supervisor plan and schedule the work of the crew. In the field, oversees and leads the work of the crew engaged in HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE work. The incumbent may be required to work overtime including nights and weekends and will be required to work night shifts during winter storm conditions. The incumbent will be required to respond to emergency call-outs. May be loaned to other cost centers/units. This position is represented under collective bargaining. Oversees and leads the work of the crew engaged in a wide variety of maintenance work such as, but not limited to, paving, pot-holing and crack-sealing; drain and ditch cleaning; sign and delineation installation, maintenance and repair; brush and tree trimming; sweeping and fence repair; and other related duties. In the winter months, will lead the crew in storm response including flooding slides, slip outs, and blocked drainage and other related storm damage. As needed, will operate various maintenance equipment such as end-dump trucks from 2-10cu.yds., with either automatic or manual transmissions and may be equipped with plows and sanders. May operate front-end loaders, motor graders, bulldozers, vactor, mowers, rollers, equipment trailers and other related vehicles while performing assigned duties. Will set and remove lane closures using early warning signs, cones, flares, cone trucks, barrier vehicles, and Shadow Trucks. The incumbent will also be required to perform manual labor as needed. Operates a computer and keeps records of personnel, equipment and materials used. Leads crew in repairing, maintaining and cleaning equipment, and crew and work areas.

Working Conditions

These positions exist in Contra Costa County.

The incumbent may expect to; work in all types of weather with temperatures ranging from 20 to 110 degrees, strong winds, rain, fog, sleet, and flooding, be exposed to poison oak, snakes, insect, loud noise, dust, chemicals, flying debris, high speed vehicle traffic adjacent to the work zone, and moving construction equipment in the work zone. The incumbent may be required to, work at heights greater than 7 ft., work in confined spaces, travel and stay overnight to attend mandatory classes, respond to emergencies after and before their shift, weekends and holidays and that their shift may change due to Departmental necessities, i.e. floods, earthquakes, and storms.
