Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Caltrans Bridge Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker (CHML) may work individually or with other crew members overseeing the performance of tasks related to bridge maintenance. The position involves working safely at heights above water and/or the traveled roadway. Incumbent may be required to work overtime including nights and weekends, may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts and is expected to respond to emergency calls. The incumbent also performs tasks related to HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE and landscape work. A valid, unrestricted Class B driver's license with tank vehicle (N) endorsement is required while performing duties associated with maintaining the State highway system; Class A driver's license is preferred, enabling the incumbent to serve as an Equipment Operator II as needed and assist crew members in equipment training. May be loaned to another crew. This position is represented under collective bargaining.

Working Conditions

Position(s) located in District 11 / Maintenance Division / West Region - San Diego

may be filled from this recruitment.

The incumbent may/shall be exposed to high-speed traffic, loud noise; dust; chemicals; extreme weather conditions and great heights; and may be required to work special projects, overtime and irregular shifts. Incumbent is required to work in a wide range of sometimes-extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to 25 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. The incumbent must travel extensively throughout the assigned area and may be required to travel and work in other areas in the District.

Personal safety requirements include:
A. Work boots, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn to provide foot and ankle support protection.
B. Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
C. Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
D. Provided safety gear; hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, harness or other safety gear must be worn when required by the Department.

Possession of a valid driver's license is required to operate a State owned or leased vehicle.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
