GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This position works as part of a team supporting several high-speed / hypersonic material evaluation programs within the Department of Defense and NASA. The CAD Engineer designs custom test hardware, makes drawings, and reviews drawings of others for the Hypersonic Structures group. This position works closely with technicians, machinists, inspectors, analysts, and other design engineers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Create conceptual design(s) to meet customer specifications.
  • Work closely with the analytical staff to solve complex technical objectives.
  • Create product definition through CAD modeling, drafting, and working with in-house machinists.
  • Work with suppliers to acquire components efficiently and cost effectively.
  • Support hands-on in-house assembly and instrumentation.
  • Revise drawings to match and provide test support.
  • Utilize SolidWorks computer-aided design (CAD) to produce initial design and specification for custom test hardware.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Build productive internal/external working relationships.

Other Job Functions

  • Use SolidWorks CAD and PDM to perform engineering design and drafting tasks.
  • Create draft versions of drawings and work with the Engineering Drafting Group to get them released through the configuration management process.
  • Create CAD models of incoming test materials and update material usage tracking drawings as necessary.
  • Document design changes through a formal engineering change notification process.
  • Utilize professional design concepts.
  • Apply company policies and procedures to resolve routine issues.
  • Work on problems of limited scope.
  • Build stable working relationships internally.
  • Receive detailed instructions on all work.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by company and government requirements.
  • Communicate and interact effectively with peers, supervisors, and public, including maintaining respect for others, and following company policies.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities as it pertains to your job.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications

  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Demonstrable education or professional experience with CAD design and drafting.
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD software
  • Good collaboration and communication skills.
  • Travel will be required to support off-site testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Department of Defense SECRET clearance.
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in relevant fields including mechanical design, materials science, or analysis.
  • Demonstrated history of technical excellence with keen attention to detail.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Technical Expertise: Expertise with SolidWorks and other drafting software is a requirement for this job. A knowledge of some manufacturing equipment, GD&T, and part inspection processes will also be valuable.
  • Communication - Ability to make technical presentations internally and to customers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work with customers to define and document requirements, address technical concerns, and provide project status.
  • Analytical Thinking and Detail Orientation- Small design details constantly change that can have large impacts on over assemblies or objectives. Identifying problems, troubleshooting, and developing and implementing solutions requires detailed analysis in each task.

WORK ENVIROMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Environment & Conditions

This position involves work in an office and laboratory environment and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:

  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
  • Protective shoes

Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the engineer must be able to:

  • Perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
  • Perform some repetitive motion (keyboarding, mouse, phones, rotation wrist using tools/equipment).
  • Ability to walk for considerable distances in performing work.
  • Ability to lift objects frequently in performing work.
  • Ability to pull or push objects on a regular basis.
  • Ability to reach for object above head or below waist.
  • Ability to stoop or crouch by bending at the waist or by bending legs.

Travel

Moderate travel, domestic and international, required. Overnight travel will be required for onsite test support.
