Responsibilities
- Manage RIDOH involvement in interagency communications activities related to overdose prevention and behavioral health
- Oversee and coordinate all activities relevant to drug overdose communications, including overdose public health campaigns, media inquiries, events, etc.
- Manage overdose communications activities for multiple federal grants across multiple divisions within RIDOH
- Research and apply evidence-based public health communications strategies
- Provide project management for communications activities, including developing, implementing, and evaluating public health communications campaigns
- Oversee the implementation of contracts with outside vendors relevant to drug overdose prevention communications to ensure contract deliverables are met
- Lead development of paid and earned media activities
- Contribute to the preparation of policy briefs and presentations for departmental leaders and external partners
- Compile, produce, and disseminate data reports to external partners, including healthcare providers
- Review and edit communications materials related to drug overdose and substance use, including newsletter content, advertisements, social media posts, web content, etc.
- Provide support and guidance to other substance use communications team members, including assisting with onboarding, reviewing draft work products, providing feedback and direction as appropriate, and ensuring that activities are aligned and well-coordinated
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to research, develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based public health communications campaigns
- Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and public speaking
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products
- Project management experience, contract management experience desired
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, attention to detail
- Initiative to launch and complete long-term projects
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal, external, and community-based partners
- Ability to oversee the work of a team and provide guidance, mentorship, and support as needed
- Bachelor’s degree in health communication, public relations, communications, public health, journalism, or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred but not required)
- Minimum of three years of related employment in a supervisory capacity in a responsible position in communications/marketing, public health, journalism, media relations, or related field Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience
- Experience in public health communications, specifically around opioid use disorder, drug overdose prevention education, substance use prevention, harm reduction, and/or behavioral health
- Experience developing presentations and written reports tailored to specific audiences
- Experience with website management and development of website content preferred
