Title: BUILDING MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

The Building Maintenance Technician is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt (eligible for overtime when appropriate) position. Working across the entire facility, the Building Maintenance Technician works predominantly to assure a clean and safe space for all entering the facility and to support the overarching operations of each program area.
The starting wage is $15.75 an hour and includes the following benefits: paid vacation time equivalent to 67.2 hours per 12-months; paid holidays, earned paid safe & sick time, health insurance via Medica (50% of premium paid by NCC), a contribution equal to 3% of your earnings to a 403(b) retirement plan, a 20% discount on most Sales Gallery ceramics, and free quarterly classes or workshops at NCC.

ABOUT THIS ROLE AND WORKING AT NORTHERN CLAY CENTER
Under the purview of the Education Manager, the Building Maintenance Technician is responsible for custodial maintenance of Northern Clay Center’s facility and will serve as the initial contact for facility related repairs. This position works closely with three other technicians to complete all aspects of the education and studio program activities and maintain the safety and cleanliness of NCC's facilities. The Building Maintenance Technician is an integral part of the community-centered environment at NCC.
Much of this role is routine week-to-week, though tasks and focus change with the season and the education program calendar. As NCC is a relatively small nonprofit organization, many staff members work across programs and often assist other team members in accomplishing their work. NCC is deeply committed to creating and sustaining a welcoming, safe, and antiracist community for all who enter our building. Our staff are actively engaged in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility training and strive to continue this learning and conversation to examine and improve both our programs and practices.
Qualified applicants will be eligible to teach classes at Northern Clay Center, in addition to their regular staff position. This position requires the employee to be available to work on an occasionally flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and evenings.
The average weekly schedule will be 6 to 11 am Monday – Friday, with an anticipated one evening or weekend special event per month, as well as additional special projects related to the American Pottery Festival and other programs. Workload will vary over the course of the calendar year, with higher volume in the two weeks between regularly scheduled classes.
We are looking for applicants who have:
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Strong organization and prioritization skills
- Experience with light construction as well as both electrical and plumbing systems
- Experience with loading, unloading, and firing electric and/or gas kilns
- A demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and under supervision
- Customer service experience in a variety of settings
- The ability to work on a flexible schedule
- The ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
- A background in ceramics is preferred
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES UNIQUE TO THIS POSITION:
- Clean all floors, sinks, bathrooms, and storage and display surfaces in all public areas on a regular basis
- Sanitize high-contact surfaces on a daily basis
- Remove classroom, office, and studio program garbage to the dumpsters
- Recycle cans, bottles, paper, cardboard, fluorescent tubes, etc. on a regular schedule
- Identify and/or facilitate equipment needing repair, e.g., lighting, plumbing, general facility repairs
- Replace filters, bulbs, and lighting ballasts as needed
- Maintain inventory of facilities cleaning and maintenance materials
- Complete light construction and repairs in service of program areas
- Identify potential safety hazards and problems
- Sweep and mop classroom spaces and aisles on a regular schedule
- Complete major floor, work, and storage surface cleaning between quarterly classes
- Mow lawns and maintain exterior grounds of building. Regularly clear leaves, snow, and other problem debris from roof vents, scuppers, and gutters
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR STUDIO SUPPORT:
Many of these responsibilities maybe shared with Education Technician or Studio Manager, and in special cases, the Outreach Technician.
- General maintenance and cleaning of clay mixing and glaze mixing areas
- Ensure appropriate set-up of classrooms and staging areas, and provide other support as needed, for all education program activities, including regular classes, visiting artist workshops and residencies, outreach programs, and special events
