Summary
Clallam County is seeking qualified applicants for Building Inspector II to perform plan review and inspections of new and existing residential and commercial buildings relating to the enforcement of the State Building Code, which includes the various codes adopted under Title 21 of the Clallam County Code; to provide assistance to homeowners and the business community; to assist Building Inspectors I on plan review and inspection of difficult or unusual requirements for complex projects as necessary; and to perform related duties as assigned.
Individuals assigned to this classification apply considerable plan review and inspection experience to major construction projects. Operates with considerable latitude for independent action and makes decisions based on demonstrated ability to interpret and apply codes and ordinances in a consistent and professional manner. Errors in judgment and performance could have substantial financial, legal and public relations impacts to the County. Supervision is received from the Building Official through periodic checks of in-process and completed work. Activities are reviewed for adequacy of technical judgment, compliance and with regulations and policies and achievement of results consistent with departmental objectives.
This is the journey (mid) level class within the Building Inspector three-level series. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are, when promoted from within the organization, filled by advancement and promotion from the Building Inspector I position, following completion of additional ICC certifications as listed under Special Requirements and demonstrated proficiency as determined by upper management. When filled from the outside, must have prior experience and appropriate certifications. This is a promotive position and is subject to written satisfactory evaluation of job performance with promotion determined by the Building Official and the Director of Community Development.
Education and Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in the building trades, construction or a related field. A degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Construction or related field may substitute for two years of experience.
Experience
Three years as Building Inspector I with Clallam County or five years of comparable experience with another agency.
Special Requirements
ICC certification as a Building Inspector is required (5 credits) and additional certification credits worth 9 credits from the following: plan review, plumbing, mechanical, fire, or energy code. Three additional certification credit values may be obtained within one year following the date of hire. Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License; ability to successfully pass all testing and examinations which measure ability to perform essential job functions.
