Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Buildings Systems Group is seeking an experienced Building Energy Research Engineer to conduct research and provide technical support in the areas of buildings decarbonization, energy and water systems performance evaluation, technology testing and demonstration, and systems integration planning for federal and commercial facilities. The successful candidate will use their technical expertise and data analysis skills to test new assessment methods for energy and water building systems and infrastructure; modeling to analyze building performance and technology planning scenarios for efficiency and resilience; and testing/demonstration of new technologies that enable more efficient building performance.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will apply science and engineering theories and develop technical approaches to solve building performance research challenges. Contribute to the development of sections of technical products, such as technical reports and journal articles, and presenting at conferences and technical forums. Manage small to moderate projects and/or project tasks. The individual will team with multi-disciplined staff from across the laboratory to share resources and optimize approaches. Generate ideas for new proposals and participates in business development activities. Enhance technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience OR

+ MS/MA OR

+ PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates are encouraged to apply if they meet several of the preferred qualifications below, but do not need to meet all.

+ Graduate degree in mechanical engineering, buildings sciences, electrical engineering, civil engineering, or related field.

+ Practical experience analyzing building- or campus-scale energy and water systems, including design, commissioning, operations and maintenance, or auditing (e.g. ASHRAE level 2).

+ Experience using whole-building modeling tools (e.g. eQUEST, Energy Plus) to identify retrofit opportunities.

+ Experience analyzing building control system data to optimize HVAC performance and use of diagnostic and prognostic methods to enable more timely and proactive operation and maintenance of building systems.

+ Experience with miscellaneous electric loads and consumer electronics power management, measurement and estimation, and power conversion.

+ Experience setting up experimental research and technology demonstrations.

+ Basic programming skills for data analysis (e.g. Python, R).

+ A track record of using a collaborative approach to problem-solving and the ability to work well with geographically distributed and interdisciplinary teams.

+ Experience interacting and communicating effectively with clients.

+ Demonstrated ability to write concisely and clearly.

+ A passion for learning and innovation to advance building systems energy efficiency.

+ Willingness to travel domestically for field work, including to U.S. military installations.
