Job description

Join Idaho National Laboratory (INL) as a Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in Computational Thermal Fluids. We are seeking an adept analyst with robust computational skills, particularly in fluid flow and heat transfer processes, with a focus on multiphase flow and chemical reactions. The role encompasses diverse applications such as waste treatment, nuclear and chemical reactors, and clean energy systems.

Technical Skills:
Expertise in computational fluid dynamics and thermal analysis codes
Proficiency in thermodynamics modeling, mechanical and/or chemical engineering
Experience with mesh generation, CAD modeling, and visualization software
   Familiarity with verification/validation/uncertainty quantification techniques
Experience with high performance computing systems
Programming proficiency in Python, including machine learning/artificial intelligence methods
Ability to comprehend and efficiently model complex physicochemical phenomena
   Strong publication history

Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment, fostering positive and productive relationships with team members.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey complex concepts and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Flexibility and adaptability to navigate evolving project requirements and research priorities.
Strong problem-solving skills, demonstrating creativity and resourcefulness in addressing challenges that may arise during the research process.
Capacity for critical thinking to analyze data, evaluate methodologies, and contribute to the development of innovative approaches.
Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and efficiently contribute to multiple aspects of the research project.

Responsibilities:

As a researcher, you will develop computational models integrating interdisciplinary skills in fluid flow, heat transfer, chemistry, combustion, materials science, nuclear science, and engineering. The position requires a deep understanding of and experience in modeling complex physical processes. Successful candidates will be highly motivated individuals that will collaborate with teams of experts to advance our understanding of physicochemical processes occurring in physical systems and translate that understanding into actionable ideas and solutions.

If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of engineering and making impactful contributions to the scientific community, we invite you to apply. Be a part of a dynamic team at INL, driving innovations in modeling and simulation.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years
Ph.D. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or related field
Fluency in the English language and excellent oral and written communication skills
   On-site position
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Requirements:

   Computational fluid dynamics (STAR-CCM+, Nek5000/NekRS)
Computational chemistry or thermodynamics (Cantera, CHEMKIN, FactSage, ThermoCalc)
Thermomechanical analysis using finite element modeling (preferably with Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment software)
Meshing software (Cubit or equivalent) and VVUQ best practices
Visualization of scientific data (ParaView or similar)
   Machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms
High performance computing, scripting and batch processing
   LINUX, Python programming
An established record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, or presentations
