As a Bridge Maintenance Supervisor, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In this position, you will:
*Supervise a work crew in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of bridges and structures per established standards, specifications, and procedures.
*Establish daily work goals, monitor performance, provide ongoing coaching, and document and evaluate work accomplishments.
*Assist the superintendent with administrative duties
*Will respond to bridge strikes and weather-related emergencies and perform activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours in length, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
*Knowledge of structure and bridge construction and maintenance methods, procedures, practices, and equipment.
*Considerable knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs applicable to highway and Bridge Maintenance work, equipment, and tools.
*Knowledge of basic inventory practices and procedures and ability to complete reports and maintain records.
*Experience in or ability to lead, direct, and train others
*Experience performing heavy manual labor
*Operate and maintain equipment used for Bridge Maintenance and repair.
*Skill in the use of various carpentry tools, concrete forming, and finishing methods
*Demonstrated experience in the use of computers and software applications.
*Valid driver's license at time of hire. Must obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment, see below for more details.
Additional Considerations
*Experienced in fabricating steel components and welding.
*Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
*Experience in inventory management
*Experience in tracking expenditures and monitoring spending plans
*Current possession of CDL
Special Instructions
Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, irregular terrain, and standing for long periods. Work is completed in, around, and above water, and from varying heights. Must have the ability to lift 70 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense. Personal protective equipment is provided.
Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.
Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which DHRM has approved.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
