Responsibilities:
Engineering and Design (90%)
- Technical lead for analysis, design, construction support services, development of contract drawings and specifications for various bridge types (conventional highway, road, trail, and pedestrian with occasional design of complex bridges), culverts, temporary structures, retaining walls and other underground structures.
- Use engineering software to draft, design, detail, and modify bridge, culvert, and retaining wall project designs/plans utilizing MDOT standard specification and plan preparation.
- Apply innovative thinking to problem solving.
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methodologies, theory, and procedures.
- Review designs for compliance with codes and specifications specifically MDOT Bridge Design Manual, Bridge Design Guides, and AASHTO LFD and LRFD bridge design specifications.
- Clarify and resolve technical issues.
- Compile plan quantities.
- Conduct bridge load ratings for various bridge types and culverts.
- May write reports and memorandums and assist with project presentations to clients.
- May assist the PM, as requested, in the preparation of cost estimates.
- Collaborate with other disciplines throughout the design process.
- Mentor staff to support their growth and development as well as reviewing technical design work and delegation of design tasks.
- Proactive communication with other team members and disciplines.
- Prepare plans, specifications, and estimates using federal, state, and local specifications, guidelines, and standards.
Administrative (10%)
- Participate in team meetings, all staff meetings, and other planning sessions.
- Participate in training and development activities as needed and directed by supervisor.
- Perform administrative tasks including, but not limited to, time sheet completion, expense reports, completing correspondence, etc.
Technical Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering from an accredited university, required.
- Licensed Professional Engineer, required.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in structural transportation related projects including bridges, culverts and retaining walls, required.
- Familiarity with structural analysis and design of conventional and complex bridges with experience in preparing MDOT, and other DOTs, and Local Agency bridge design packages, required.
- Modeling and design software experience with MicroStation/ORD/OBM/OBD, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and AASHTOWare Bridge Rating as well as knowledge of AASHTO and DOT design standards preferred.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills required.
Physical Qualifications
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Physical dexterity and ability to negotiate around a crowded and busy working office area, and around a crowded and busy working area, including construction sites.
