On a daily basis, the educational aide performs a variety of duties that involve working with students individually and in small groups, reinforcing daily lessons, motivating learning, assessing progress, assisting with classroom management, and other similar duties as assigned.
Position Overview
The Division of Specialized Instruction (DSI) works to provide a high quality continuum of services in an inclusive environmentso every student with disabilities is prepared for success in college, career, and life. The division works with schools to design,implement, and monitor programs and supports for students with disabilities.
The Coordinator, Braille Transcriber is responsible for converting textbooks, classroom instructional materials such as formative and summative assessments, graphic organizers and reference guides, and any other content into the student’s primary learning media (braille, large print, etc.). The Coordinator determines how to most accurately present information from print to braille and then transcribes it into braille so that a student who is blind or visually impaired has the same access to content as their sighted peers.

Responsibilities

Translates printed text into braille for students who are blind or visually impaired.
Ensures all students have printed materials in their primary learning media and in a timely manner.
Transcribes any instructional materials such as textbooks, assessments, activities, tests, novels and create tactile graphics and other materials as assigned.
Works collaboratively with Teachers of the Visually Impaired, General Education Teachers, and other educational professionals to prepare adaptive instructional materials for students with visual impairments.
Interacts and responds effectively to urgent requests from service providers and educational team members.
Tracks and produces student progress using data systems that align to OSI and DCPS.
Tracks and reports delivery of all materials to each individual school site.
Embosses, edits and binds materials.
Creates tactile graphics of maps, charts, pictures, routes or other tactile displays using various tools, materials and machines.
Demonstrate efficient organizational skills.
Meet all schedules and timelines.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and two to four years of related work experience.
Master's degree preferred.
A valid Literary Braille Certificate from the Library of Congress.
UEB coursework such as the CNIB UEB Transcriber’s Course.
Demonstrated knowledge of braille software and formatting.
Proficiency in proofreading, mathematical and literacy transcription.
Demonstrates efficient organizational skills.
Ability to meet all schedules and timelines.
