We are hiring a Behavior Specialist to develop plans promoting independent life skills for intellectually disabled individuals in our care.
As a Behavior Specialist you will performs functional assessment of individuals or systematically analyze a behavior and why it happens. With team input, develop a Behavior Support Plan (BSP) or a plan to manage or correct a difficult or inappropriate behavior and present the BSP at the Person Centered Plan meeting. Train the building or apartment staff on the implementation of the BSP. Monitor, evaluate, and revise the BSP to assure it is assisting the individual by both working with the individual, staff as well as monitoring and reporting the monthly data and preparing monthly progress notes. Assist the QIDP (Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional) or building manager for about 40 individuals and team with the Restriction of Rights. With the QIDP, attend and present Level II and Level III BSP's to the USDC Human Rights Committee after presentation to Peer Review. Also train staff in the New Employee Orientation and Re-Certification Training on Psychology and managing behavior. Prepare behavioral data and attend needed Psychiatric clinics, assist the direct care staff with crisis intervention of a behavioral episode.
Principal Duties
The Behavior Support Analyst in this position will be:

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of assessment tools.
  • Conducting functional assessments and analysis when appropriate.
  • Developing behavior plans/treatment plans with a focus on reducing problematic behaviors.
  • Teaching appropriate behaviors and reduce maladaptive behaviors.

This job may be filled at either of the levels listed below. (Rate as listed or in accordance with DHRM Rules for current state employees.)
Behavior specialist level $22.06 - $33.14 per hour. Selected employees will be expected to complete the BCBA certification within two years of the assignment and will be placed in a Temporary TL position for public candidates or a career mobility agreement for internal candidates. TL employees will be converted to schedule B and internal career mobility agreements will end upon completion of the BCBA certification. The ideal candidate for the Behavior Specialist would have already obtained a BCaBA certification.

  • Experience working two or more years with intellectually disabled individuals.
  • Experience working two or more years working in the field of applied Behavior Analysis
  • Preference may also be given to applicants with two or more years full time paid experience developing Behavior Support Plans (BSP) for individuals with intellectual disabilities
  • Licensed as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in the state of Utah.

  • Acts as a resource for management and staff; provides technical support within the area of responsibility.

  • Interpret psychological or mental health assessments by obtaining background information such as physical, psychological or mental health, and social factors which contribute to the client's situation and by studying case histories of clients/residents.

  • Gather data, prepare reports or summarize information.

  • Observes resident and/or client behavior in structured and unstructured settings to determine behavior patterns and functioning levels.

  • Provides administrative support.

  • Required to certify in the MANDT System including physical performance of the various MANDT Physical interventions and techniques. This includes the ability to train staff and to engage an aggressive individual using MANDT to protect themselves & others.

  • Communicates with Core team and line staff when new or emerging behaviors are manifesting with clients and evaluates/assesses need for Behavior Support Plan or referral to Psychiatrist or Medical.

  • Interacts with a professional care team to identify replacement behavior goals.

  • Consults with the care team to discuss treatment plans, new or unusual situations, findings, options, and recommendations on client/patient cases.

  • Prepares reports based on psychological tests and observation data for review and sign off by higher level authority.

  • Analyzes, summarizes and/or reviews data; reports findings, interprets results and/or makes recommendations.

  • Delivers presentations, stand up training, or instruction to staff, management, clients, or the general public.

Typical Qualifications

  • Use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions.

  • Interviewing techniques, instructional methods and techniques.

  • Human behavior and performance, mental processes, psychological research, or assessment, methods, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

  • Instructional methods and techniques.

  • Applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.

  • Information and techniques needed to rehabilitate physical and mental ailments and to provide career guidance including alternative treatments, rehabilitation equipment and its proper use, and methods to evaluate treatment effectiveness.

  • Speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally.

  • Observe the environment, paying attention to changes, inappropriate activity, or potential problems.

  • Provide mental health assessment using principles and theories in behavioral analysis.

  • Understand nuances of dual diagnosis when working with intellectually disabled individuals, work with professional team members in situations where psychiatric medications and therapy are provided.

  • Utilize agency and community resources and services.

  • Provide technical assistance to users.

  • Deliver presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques.

  • Compose and produce reports, documents and related material.

  • Communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.

  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequate light, heat & ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips & falls, observing fire policy. Risks involve implementing MANDT in trying to de-escalate an aggressive individual.

  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; general physical demands walking, standing, driving, etc. Some special physical demands may be necessary when assisting with an aggressive individual and implementing a MANDT technique.

  • In order to work at the Utah State Developmental Center as part of the DHHS immunization policy, you must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and have at least started the primary series interval recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with a current State of Utah licensure.
  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lb) with or without a reasonable accommodation, in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
