SUMMARY:
The Bioinformatics Operation Support Engineer is responsible for supporting bioinformatics software systems, including their maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting. This role involves working closely with both the developers and users of those systems to support efficient and effective operation of analytical systems, as well as supporting relevant user and development requests.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Bioinformatics Operations Support:
- Maintain and monitor support systems for bioinformatics software, including bioinformatics pipelines, bioinformatics tools such as GATK and Dragen, bioinformatics databases, high performance clusters (HPC) for scientific computing, and LIMS systems.
- Intake customer issues, troubleshoot them and follow through to resolution, and ensure proper escalation of issues to appropriate internal teams.
- Bioinformatics Programming:
- Design and develop scripts, database queries, and other software as required for updating, maintaining, and operating bioinformatics pipelines and analyses.
- Documentation:
- Assist in documenting updates and clinical validations for the evaluation of bioinformatics software for clinical use.
- Ensure proper recording and communication of technical issues and support processes.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with scientists, software engineers, and other bioinformaticians in a cross-functional environment to diagnose and resolve technical issues.
- Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of system updates and issues.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher degree in Bioinformatics, or Computer Science degree with Biology coursework, or a scientific degree with computational coursework.
- EXPERIENCE
- Two (2) years of experience in bioinformatics or a scientific technology support role.
- COMPETENCIES:
- Experience in bioinformatics data analysis or bioinformatics pipeline development, especially for next-generation sequencing data.
- Experience in operation and troubleshooting of bioinformatics systems and common tools (Dragen, GATK, Samtools, Bioconductor).
- Demonstrated competency in a scripting language (Bash, Python).
- Demonstrated competency in statistical programming (R, Python).
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems and their use (CentOS, Ubuntu).
- Familiarity with databases and SQL-based database programming.
- Experience in a tech support role a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent client-facing skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong curiosity and the ability to learn quickly and adapt to a fast-changing environment.
