Principal Responsibility

The Free Clothing Program (FCP) provides new and gently-used clothing to men, women, and children, at no cost. Through our regular services, we facilitate a shopping experience for guests in our boutique-style store. Guests can choose from our selection of casual wear, professional attire, warm weather clothes, and as available, linens, bags, hygiene products, and other accessories. As the Service Associate you are essential in distributing clothing to low-income individuals and families. In the spirit of our Franciscan values and heritage, our team provides compassion and care daily. As a steward of healing and social justice, you are expected to meet the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Guest Engagement

  • Check and verify guests’ service eligibility and schedule future appointments.
  • Assist in the distribution of free clothing to families (men, women, and children), in a courteous and respectful manner in order to create a dignified and positive shopping experience.
  • Check guests out and verifies quantities of clothing items received by each guest. Keeps accurate service records.
  • Assist with client intake process, and helps identify clients in need of other services offered at SAF or other community-based organizations, and makes necessary referrals to those programs.
  • Orient guests to the store, the program’s policies, and procedures, and assists guests in locating clothing items as necessary.
  • Remain up-to-date and well-informed on all SAF programs and departments, as well as all pertinent community-based organizations.
  • Treat all guests with empathy, dignity, and respect. Seek to understand the other person's perspective and
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively across cultures and an openness to learning about cultures not familiar to oneself.

Program Administration and Operations

  • Complete reports and all other paperwork neatly, legibly, and thoroughly.
  • Enter data and information electronically as required. Looks up data and reports electronically through a database as requested.
  • Responsible for participant and/or program data tracked through St. Anthony databases as required by the program.
  • Assist with the training, orientation, coordination, and evaluation of volunteers and interns assigned to FCP.
  • Facilitate and helps ensure a safe, secure environment for clients, volunteers, program participants and staff (with respect to security, health and safety hazards). Observes safety procedures and precautions. Aware of and assists in the identification of workplace and job hazards.
  • Assist with the integration and coordination between the stockroom and the store, including re-stocking the store on an ongoing basis.
  • Understand and follow the organization's programs, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in regular training and development opportunities to increase personal capacity to apply innovative approaches to daily workflows, service delivery, and employee engagement.
  • Maintain clean, organized, orderly, and welcoming shopping areas and checkout space.

  • Participate in relevant meetings supporting team communication and the program's capacity to fulfill organizational goals and mission.
  • Collaboratively works with others to achieve team success.
  • Manage stress and pressure situations calmly and responsively. Maintain the capacity to control reactions and awareness of how their behavior or response can impact others.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred or equivalent experience in a non-profit, retail, or customer service setting.
  • Fluency in other languages, particularly Cantonese or Mandarin, is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm. Can set limits and practice professional boundaries with guests, volunteers, donors, and coworkers.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and high-pressure situations in a self-composed and self-assured manner.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours and days (weekends and holidays required).
  • Ability to complete paperwork neatly and legibly.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to use information and communication technologies (computers, smartphones, and iPads) to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information.
  • Ability to be punctual, reliable, cooperative, and stay team-oriented.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty desired.
  • Commitment to St. Anthony Foundation Statement of Values and a desire to work for a social services agency serving the poor.
