Cell Testing Engineer

Description: We are looking for a cell characterization engineer to lead our Cell Testing efforts. This person should be have a demonstrated experience testing lithium-ion Battery Cells, analyzing data to characterize and validate them, and define actionable plans for improving cell design and processes to improve performance. Ideal candidate is someone with strong background in data analysis and processing in Matlab, as well as hands-on experience instrumenting and testing cells in a lab environment, using battery testers.

Responsibilities:

• Instrumenting and testing Battery Cells, programming cyclers, managing data collection.
• Defining characterization and validation test plans for pouch and larger format cells.
• Managing Cell Testing process, schedule, troubleshooting test issues.
• Reviewing Cell Test results to deliver comprehensive testing reports.
• Developing new test protocols and methods for their analysis.
• Supporting statistical analysis of test results.

Core Requirements:

• Direct Experience with Cell Testing - demonstrated experience testing batteries using battery cyclers/testers such as Maccor, analyzing raw test data produced by these testers to characterize cells, awareness of data quality considerations and their impact on testing quality.
• Experience in Programming and Data Analysis - ideally an experienced Matlab user, but Python or C++ programming and basic familiarity with Matlab are also acceptable, experience analyzing test results by developing custom data processing scripts, demonstrated experience processing large volumes of test data, reading different file types and automation of analysis process, familiarity with data structures.

Good to have:

• Understanding Lithium-ion Batteries - familiarity with how lithium-ion cells work, how they are designed, deep understanding of fundamental concepts like energy, capacity, DCIR, Coulombic efficiency, OCV, SoC, C-rate, etc. and excellent understanding how they can be measured, ability to connect how design and material choices affect cell performance.
• Cloud-Based Data Analysis and Automation - experience with cloud-based data analysis e.g. using AWS and developing software processing large amounts of data automatically would be a plus.
• Experience Managing Cell Testing Plans - demonstrated experience leading test campaigns, defining test plans and step-by-step protocols, managing testing schedule, experience of testing multiple cell builds, reporting results with comprehensive analysis of cell performance and test issues.
• Understanding Statistics - familiarity with key concepts and software packages/languages (Matlab, JMP, etc) used for statistical analysis, demonstrated experience using statistical methods to understand population performance based on limited sample size of tested cells.

Communication skills:

• Clarity and presentation skills - demonstrated ability to present data clearly and meaningfully, answering questions like: What is the main conclusion?; Why is this relevant?; What are the next steps based on the results I am presenting?, ability to clearly communicate is a must.
• Integrity - commitment to present true and accurate data, even if they are not leading to expected or clear conclusions.
