Department Summary & Job Purpose:
Head Basketball Coach and Lecturer in Physical Education and Athletics is a full-time coaching and teaching position at the rank of lecturer. Under the supervision of the chair of Physical Education and director of athletics, the successful candidate will coach, organize, and administer an intercollegiate varsity basketball program and teach lifetime sports and fitness activities in the Physical Education department.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit, yield, mentor, and retain a diverse group of academically and athletically talented student-athletes.
- Identify, develop, and supervise assistant coach(s).
- Organize, manage, and schedule practices, training programs, and contests.
- Coach student-athletes to their full potential.
- Develop and manage sports and recruiting budgets for basketball.
- Manage team travel and meals in consultation with the department coordinator.
- Work with the associate athletics director for facilities to ensure equipment and facilities maintenance.
- Promote a culture of compliance by working with the director of athletics to complete necessary NCAA paperwork, staying informed of sports and governance body rule changes to minimize violations, and, in the case of violations or problems, reporting them without delay for immediate attention.
- Engage with donors and potential donors as requested by the director of athletics.
- Promote a culture of health, well-being, and safety in all aspects of the varsity sport and Physical Education programs.
- Imagine and implement innovative and fun Physical Education courses that appeal to various skill sets, interests, and experiences.
- Provide administrative support for the Physical Education program, including but not limited to class syllabus development, maintaining attendance records, and grading.
- Participate on department and College committees as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- The position requires a Master’s degree, demonstrated successful coaching and recruiting experience, the ability to work well with student-athletes, and the ability to function effectively at a competitive liberal arts NCAA Division III college with highly selective academic standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree and teaching experience is preferred.

Compliance Requirements:
- All department employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the department are to be reported to the appropriate parties. Annually, each department member must pass the NCAA Division III rules test and complete athletics staff sexual violence prevention training.
Physical Demands:
- Light work, as well as talking and communicating ideas. Employee speaks with students, other staff, and faculty daily by telephone, e-mail, or in person.
Working Conditions:
- Regular evening and weekend hours are involved, and the ability to travel is required.
