Job description

Introduction This is entry level work at the Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) plant. Bargaining unit position. Nature Of Work An employee in this class performs entry level work of average difficulty in areas of operations, mechanical, electrical, co-generation, instrumentation, or facilities maintenance.

Under general supervision and guidance, the employee performs duties and assigned tasks in conformance with established procedures requiring the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. Many work activities involve hazardous materials and/or equipment and employees must comply with appropriate safety precautions when dealing with gas, mechanical and electrical system, and other similar components and processes within the plant environment. Shift work will be required including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Tasks require the ability to work in a team environment. Work is reviewed by observation and results attained. Examples of Duties Assists in basic repairs/modifications, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting on equipment; assists with cleaning, isolation, and preparation of equipment for repair/maintenance; assists with cleaning and upkeep on industrial equipment.

Assists with inspection of co-gen and auxiliary equipment and with inspection of proper operation of intake/exhaust air systems. Assists with performing all types of alignments; assists with process control adjustments, proper operation of odor control systems, and pump station preventive maintenance and corrective procedures. Completes operations related equipment cleaning (samplers, etc.); performs general building maintenance; performs site restoration; reports all equipment malfunctions as they occur.

Collects and processes all sludge samples, junction chamber samples, main pump station samples, and odor control samples. Operates waste gas burners; maintains ventilation systems; replaces appropriate light bulbs and indicator lamps; adjusts and changes packing. Assists with inventory, handling, and replacement of chemical supplies; completes all related paperwork, including documentation of completed work.

Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of: basic safety practices; basic mechanical practices; electrical maintenance practices; gas flow equipment; jacket water flows; the physical properties of gases and liquids; the use of proper signals for equipment operations; equipment identification systems; basic repair/maintenance practices on industrial equipment. Ability to: establish and maintain productive working relationships with co-workers and the public; motivate and work with others in a collaborative team environment; deal appropriately with others in all situations; understand and follow written and oral instructions; lift 50 pounds; climb ladders; work in confined spaces; utilize basic safety practices (e.g.

lockout/tagout); follow proper procedures for oil sampling; learn new work practices and procedures. Skill in: use of hand tools; use of small power tools; use of gas detector equipment; use of SCBA; use of communication equipment; use of power lifting equipment (forklift, truck mounted cranes). Basic computer skills.

Minimum Qualifications AWT employees - Must meet criterion for Level I on the job skills matrix. Others - Graduation from an accredited high school or GED with 2 years of utility or industrial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: External hires must meet all matrix qualifications within 18 months of hire date.

Licenses or Certifications Possession of a valid Florida class E driver's license. Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) preferred. Examination Evaluation of education and experience.

Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing. Comments Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
