As an AVP of Underwriting Quality Assurance, you'll lead a team of underwriting auditors and support staff committed to identifying underwriting improvement opportunities by reviewing individual accounts/policies for adherence and clarity of guidelines, authority statements, and state regulations. Our focus is across our multiple business units including Small Commercial, Middle Market, Individual Risk Brokerage, Contract Binding, MLS, Surety, E-Risk and Programs & Alternative Ventures.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with senior management to translate strategic direction into organization direction for the Commercial and ES&S Underwriting Quality Assurance team.
  • Leads the creation of all required artifacts for the team, including audit guidelines, and report templates to be utilized in all audits to maintain consistency.
  • Drives the utilization of data in the audit process for question completion to enable continuous audits, and increased volume with lower auditor touch.
  • Leads the creation and enables scorecards and reports to capture improvements and areas of focus. This includes area specific observations as well as portfolio wide perspective across all of the business units.
  • Leads the Commercial and ES&S Quality Assurance process and assuring completion of audits, adherence to best practices, and underwriting performance calibration with business units. Ensures appropriate capabilities and process requirements are established, including nature and frequency of audits, questions, appropriate sampling, and rigorous issue management to closure.
  • Oversees associate management including staffing models, hiring, performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow, and organization planning.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP Underwriting & Product Performance - Commercial and Excess / Surplus & Specialty, manages a team of 30 professionals: including 5 Direct reports.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Bachelor's degree; additional P&C certifications preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: CPCU, RPLU, CRIS, ARM, and or MBA
Experience: Minimum of 10 years of commercial underwriting experience with expertise in the underwriting process and specifically the underwriting audit process. Demonstrates significant people leadership experience, including larger diverse teams, and experience working across business units.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strategy, leadership, command skills, executive presence, communication, executive influence, drive for results, interpersonal savvy, change management, organizational agility, and technical underwriting acumen.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resource Business Partner.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.
The national salary range for AVP, Underwriting Quality Assurance - Commercial and Excess / Surplus & Specialty : $159,000.00-$313,000.00
The expected starting salary range for AVP, Underwriting Quality Assurance - Commercial and Excess / Surplus & Specialty : $167,000.00 - $279,000.00
