The AVP Consumer Credit provides direct supervision of Consumer Underwriters and works in partnership with Relationship Specialists and Branch Managers to ensure that the credit union is making sound Consumer Credit decisions according to established policy and guidelines while fulfilling our commitment to meeting the borrowing needs of our members without compromising safety and soundness.

Manages the consumer underwriting team by establishing and measuring service level standards of the team with metrics reporting and accountability measures. Analyzes credit trends, processes, and workflows to enhance efficiencies and the appropriate alignment of underwriter skill sets with duties to assure compliance with policy and federal and state regulations. Responsible for the engagement, development, training, performance, and retention of the underwriting staff including the efficient utilization and proficiency of underwriting platforms (ie. Loan Director). Ensures that all underwriting decisions are well documented in loan origination systems and any policy exceptions are noted.

Primary liaison with Branch Administration to foster coaching and training with branch and remote lending staff to ensure that we are following processes and maximizing opportunities while mitigating risks. Coordinates with Branch Administration and Chief Credit Officer and other Credit/Lending/Collections personnel to conduct periodic reviews (minimum Quarterly) of past credit decisions (including charged off loans) to ensure that the credit union is fulfilling our mission within our risk and credit tier appetite with limited policy exceptions and monitoring of delinquencies and charge-offs. Prepares monthly reports as required by management.

Responsible for timely management and decisioning of loans in Consumer Underwriting Manager Queue. Reviews and evaluates escalated Consumer Credit applications, (including employee loans) and renders credit decisions based on lending authority within credit union policies and guidelines and risk appetite and assists members as needed. Develop subject matter expertise as it relates to credit and structuring of consumer loans and credit bureau reporting. Maintains an in-depth, up-to-date knowledge on all credit union products and services.

Approves, declines, or counter-offer loan applications within set lending authority or recommends decision to appropriate approval authority as necessary based on UW resources and application volumes. Periodically reviews the work of underwriting staff to ensure sound underwriting decisions (approvals and declines) and compliance with lending regulations and internal policies. Responsible for resolving credit disputes daily though E-Oscar credit resolution platform. Must also work on resolving disputes that are received directly from membership. Responsible for maintenance of Consumer Underwriting Guidelines and execution of pricing or collateral advance rate changes etc.

Coordinates the investigation of personal and credit information; assists with credit investigations, as needed, (ie E-Oscar Credit Resolution Platform) along with other duties and special assignments as designated by credit leadership. Must also work on resolving disputes that are received directly from membership. Responsible for maintenance of Consumer Underwriting Guidelines and execution of and pricing or collateral advance rate changes etc. while taking initiative by making recommendations to consumer policy and guidelines as necessary and stays abreast of current industry and portfolio trends and competition; participates in annual training as required by the BSA/OFAC Compliance Officer. Demonstrates personal accountability by supporting the audit of loan files to ensure loan quality and adherence to consumer loan policies. This position is eligible to participate in Smart Financial's Work/Life Arrangement Program which outlines specific remote working days available per the program guidelines.

Requirements

Experience

Five years to eight years of similar or related experience, including preparatory experience. Management experience is required.

Education/Certifications/Licenses

A college degree.

Interpersonal Skills

A significant level of trust, credibility and diplomacy is required. In-depth dialogue, conversations and explanations with customers, direct and indirect reports and outside vendors can be of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature. Communications may involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance. Typically includes subject matter experts as well as first level to middle managers.

Other Skills

Mortgage Underwriting experience preferred but not required. Must be independent thinker and confident in decision-making and utilization of lending authority in making credit decisions within SFCU Consumer Loan Policy and Guidelines. Attention to detail. Analytical competency accessing LTV, DTI and debt capacity and utilization from Credit Bureau and other data sources. Ability to perform audit and review of credit decisioning post-closing to identify and concentrations of risk or underwriting deficiencies.

Physical Requirements

Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements

Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations, spell accurately, and understand computer basics. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
