Automotive Engineer (SME)

 

This position requires an active Secret clearance and the ability to obtain a TS/Sensitive Compartmental Information (SCI) clearance to be considered. 

 

The Automotive Engineer (SME) position provides critical management and engineering analysis of vehicle dynamics and performance of armored vehicle platforms.

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Automotive Engineer (SME): Pay commensurate with experience.

Automotive Engineer (SME) Responsibilities Include: 

  • Assist in the formulation of policy and guidance to the field, strategic planning, and supply chain analysis and risk management.  Review and make recommendations for the transformation of existing practices to improve the Division's support to DS operations worldwide and provide exemplary support to the Department of State. 
  • Guide and implement the Division's strategic vision.  Ensure the Division sustains an evolving supply chain organization, delivering procurement, shipping, and warehousing services and continuous innovation through research and development and liaison with the interagency.
  • Analyze existing operations to identify innovative improvements and propose plans to ensure Division business processes remain agile and ready to respond to new and emerging threats and DS worldwide operations.
  • Oversee programs for evaluating vehicle performance and systems integration of armored vehicle platforms.  Emphasis placed on proper welding, bonding, fastening of armor into vehicles.  Validate vehicle powertrain performance with armor interfaces such as glass and doors.  Validate vehicle systems integration and predicting vehicle or component behavior under different conditions. 
  •  Develop and manage programs for major technical investigations and applied research in the area of vehicle systems, dynamics and integration of protective armor into vehicles.  Focus placed on development and validation of new armor systems that offer lighter weight or performance improvement alternatives compared to currently approved materials for both opaque and transparent systems.
  •  Develop and manage programs to perform technical investigations in the area of armoring, metallurgical science, ceramic materials, material processing, heat treating and applied research.
  •  Develop and manage programs for the investigation into automotive upgrades to enhance the payload of vehicles for the purpose of receiving additional armor weight.  Focus placed on increased payload, improved braking, and improved power output to ensure adequate vehicle handling and response required to perform vehicle escape and evade maneuvers.
  •  Operate with a high level of independent discernment responsibility for implementing functional strategy, administration, and coordination of programs, providing technical and programmatic counsel and advice to management.
  • Responsible for the managing cost, schedule, and performance of major projects on schedule.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Automotive Engineer (SME) Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested: 

  • B.S. Degree in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Material Science from an ABET accredited university. 
  • Master's Degree in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Material Science from an ABET accredited university is preferred.
  • Five plus (5+) years of experience as an engineer in the automotive or fabrication industries and has mastered all relevant technical and analytical tools.
  • Eight plus (8+) years' experience working with automotive systems is preferred.
  • At least two (2) of the five (5) years must been in the analysis of vehicle dynamics, performance development, and/or body and trim design.
  • A working knowledge of electric vehicles and in-vehicle connectivity, including telematics, infotainment, and vehicle communications.
  • Proficiency with a variety of the automotive service field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Provide expert judgment and analysis for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems for OEM and aftermarket automobiles.
  • Must be able to resolve highly sophisticated technical issues and conduct advanced research for automobiles.
  • Must have the background, education, and experience to recommend alterations to improve quality of products and/or procedures for OE and aftermarket automobiles.
  • Ensures the integration of OEM powertrain, electrical, and software systems with armored vehicle platforms.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of vehicle dynamics, controls, powertrain, electrical systems, automotive electronics, and software.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and solve engineering problems related to aftermarket armored vehicle performance.
  • Must rely on automotive experience and discernment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Working knowledge of Power Management, embedded software development, testing and associated tools.
  • Results-driven individual with initiative and a proactive approach to resolving issues.
  • Exhibits appropriate interpersonal skills and communication methods to work effectively with global partners to meet mutual goals.
  • Demonstrates creativity and the ability to use independent judgment.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Mastery of principles, theories, and concepts of physical security and construction security in order to provide authoritative advice and guidance planning, management, and coordination of physical security projects for Department of State domestic facilities.
  • Experience with design and feasibility of automotive subsystems is preferred.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense or Government acquisition programs is preferred.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
