Attendant Counselor
Duties:

- Provides direct care and supervises all activities of Juvenile Detention Center residents through daily schedule including meals, school, clean-up, showers, recreation, visitation, letter writing and daily activities. Maintains documentation of facility activities; process new intakes and releases; dispenses medication as directed by the nurse and administers First Aid/ CPR, if necessary; assists in the preparation of occasional food preparation for residents.

Upon intake, is responsible to search: (i) each new intake resident; (ii) each resident returning from appointments outside of the building; (iii) after school; (iv) after meals and visitation; and (v)after any other times deemed necessary by the Supervisor. Provides periodic searches of cells, lockers, and school room desks; checks at security devices at least one (1) time during each shift; maintains current count of residents' spoons and meal trays; searches all incoming personal belongings and mail for contraband, etc.; secures cells and all doors/room at designated times; recognizes threatening situations, medical emergencies, suicides, tornadoes, fires, and escape attempts; distributes clean uniforms and bedding on appointed days.

Must complete required communication reports and documents, both written and verbal, including, but not limited to intakes, releases, overnight reports, medication logs, personal logs, daily logs, incident reports, and in-house charges files on residents. Must also maintain files on current residents and juveniles on detainer and compiles list or residents eligible to be checked by nurse and attend school.

Monitor each residents attitude/behavior; develops good rapport with residents; is able to listen and counsel residents; provides a positive role model to residents; maintains respect as an authority figure; may be required to use restraints; monitoring all persons entering the Juvenile Detention Center; diverts phone calls and visitors, when necessary; and reports any breach or potential breach immediately to the Supervisor; administers the rules/ regulations of the detention center firmly and fairly.

Escorts residents to and from court proceedings; distributes clean uniforms and bedding on appointed days.

Supervises residents while cleaning and folding laundry; dispenses materials needed for maintenance program; keeps an on-going schedule for cleaning/maintenance; restocks supplies need on-hand; notifies Supervisor of any damage or shortage.

Required to attend orientation training and additional training of up to (40) hours per annum.
Qualification Requirements, Education and/or Experience:

Requires a broad and thorough knowledge of principles and practices in a specialized field which is typically acquired through completion of a baccalaureate program or its technical equivalent or licensure in Criminal Justice, Social Work or Corrections (i.e.:BA, MSPR). The completion of a baccalaureate program or its technical equivalent is preferred, but is not necessarily a requirement for employment. It is preferred the applicant possess a minimum of six (6) to eighteen (18) months related experience and/or training in the judicial/court field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, but is not a requirement for employment. Applicant must possess a progressive knowledge of County functions and possess the ability to effectively perform a set of tasks requiring basic reading, writing and math functions and to make reasonable interpretations of situations to residents and other employees of the organization. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and transporting privileges may be restricted at Supervisor's discretion for offenses including, but not limited to, fleeing and eluding, D.U.I. and reckless operation. Applicant may be required to attend workshops and in-service training as may be required.
