Position Summary
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, the Athletics Communications Director (ACD) will promote and market the 21 varsity sport programs. The ACD must have proven experience with successfully marketing and promoting Athletics across campus, within the local community, and nationally through multiple methods. The ultimate candidate must have a commitment to equity and inclusion.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understands and appreciates the mission of Guilford College and is able to relate it to all constituencies.
  • With the approval of the Director of Athletics, develops an overall vision for supporting and promoting the Athletics program.
  • Knowledge of and experience with, game operations for Department sponsored sports including sport specific software.
  • Meaningful experience with media relations, social media, writing and editing skills as well as development of graphics for social media platforms, photography, etc.
  • Maintain appropriate sport and coaching records.
  • Services the College's athletics department, including attendance at home and away competitions as Department, NCAA and/or conference requires or deems necessary.
  • Must ensure equity in the quality and scope of coverage for the athletics program.
  • Coordinates and schedules team and staff photos, including competition photos.
  • Responsible for the supervision and mentoring of the sports communications staff including any staff assistants, graduate assistants and/or student assistants. Also accountable for workers, game operations, and promotions activities.
  • Must be willing to work long hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Maintains and ensures necessary record keeping and documentation.
  • Responsible for adherence to the Athletics Communications budget.
  • Develop a working relationship with other areas on campus such as Student Affairs, Student Government, Student Involvement, College Marketing, College Communications, the GC Bookstore, etc.
  • Evaluates and recommends to the Athletics Director, new techniques and equipment that would enhance and benefit the sports communications program.
  • Serves as the primary media contact for the Athletics Department and the sports program.
  • Understands and maintains confidentiality as required.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the College and the Department by performing additional duties as determined by the Athletics Director.

SUPERVISION
The Athletics Communications Director is supervised by the Director of Athletics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5 years of professional experience
  • Must be able to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Must be able to satisfy the athletics event schedule for competitions, travel, and work on evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • Must be familiar with NCAA governing rules for DIII and the ODAC.
  • Hands on knowledge of Stat Crew and websites such as Presto and/or SideArm.
  • Must have knowledge of video streaming.
  • Must have working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Must be highly organized and able to multi-task.
  • Must be CPR & AED certified.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree.
  • Collegiate professional experience within sports information, public relations and/or promotions.
  • Ability to market the athletics program to local vendors.
  • Experience covering Football.
  • Commitment to celebrating and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in its many forms.
