Job Description Summary:
Under close supervision this position works on assignments that are routine in nature, requiring limited judgment. This position develops skills and learns policies and procedures to complete routine tasks to perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and equipment operation on Athletic Fields, bike paths, facilities, park space, turf, and other recreation properties and facilities.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists lead with training programs focusing on equipment safety, Athletic Field maintenance, Parks maintenance, wildlife management, and other relevant areas.
- Collaborate with other Parks field staff to address maintenance needs, special projects, and unforeseen emergencies.
- Perform a range of horticultural tasks such as planting, fertilizing, pruning, and effective weed control.
- Assist with turf maintenance practices as directed, including mowing, fertilization, aeration, and irrigation management.
- Reports irrigation issues to lead and Irrigation division.
- Adheres to and promotes safety procedures, regulations, and policies to create a secure work environment.
- Assist with maintenance tasks on equipment, structures, and recreational facilities.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations, which may include addressing tree damage, flood recovery, and other urgent matters.
- Understands and adheres to departmental and city mission, vision, and values.
- Will be required to perform snow removal duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- General mechanical knowledge and aptitude necessary to perform a variety of routine trades-related duties.
- Ability to use hand/power tools and other equipment specific to landscape and park maintenance.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Ability to read operation manuals.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other governmental agencies, other employees, and the general public.
- Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Possess proficient skills in utilizing tools, equipment, and software relevant to the role.
- Exhibit excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Capable of carrying out physically demanding tasks outdoors, even under varying weather conditions.
- Maintain flexibility regarding irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
- Dependable, team player (can-do, will-do attitude)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hold an associate degree, certification, or completed training in a related field.
- Willingness to gain experience working for a public agency.
- Demonstrate a limited understanding of resource conservation within a parks maintenance context.
- Demonstrate familiarity with high-visitor urban environments.
- Possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class B.
- Exhibit the ability to communicate technical information to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
- Possess limited skills in utilizing tools, equipment, and software relevant to the role.
- Developing communication and customer service skills.
- Capable of carrying out physically demanding tasks outdoors, even under varying weather conditions.
- Maintain flexibility regarding irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Limited experience in horticulture, turf management, irrigation, and general park maintenance.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Engage in physically demanding tasks outdoors across a variety of weather conditions.
- Display the ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds and competently operate machinery.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, dragging, and pushing.
- Leverage effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Adaptability to work under stressful situations and shifting priorities.
- Demonstrate proficiency in operating machinery and using office equipment.
- Will be required to perform snow removal duties as required.
