ATHLETIC DIRECTOR - EXETER HIGH SCHOOL
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Principal, the Athletic Director provides leadership in the development, organization, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive school athletic program in compliance with the NHIAA. The Athletic Director promotes the value that athletics and sportsmanship can offer students and the school, and serves as a liaison between the school and organizations associated with school athletics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
LEADERSHIP
  • Develops short and long-range goals and objectives for the athletic program and evaluates their attainment annually.
  • Supports the superintendent, principal and school board goals and priorities in compliance with all strategies, programs, policies and procedures.
  • Develops, models and enforces professional standards of conduct among staff members and coaches.
  • Coordinates and leads staff/coach professional development.
  • Recommends, informs and administers policies and regulations pertaining to athletics.
  • Counsels with internal and external personnel (e.g. administrators, auditors, public agencies, community members, sponsors, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
  • Ensures all student athletic requirements and concerns are properly addressed in a timely manner.
  • Mediates conflicts with student athletes, coaches, and/or parents.
  • Stays informed of legal decisions made in all areas under AD prevue such as Title IX, sex discrimination and negligence cases.
SUPERVISION
  • Oversees all athletic department personnel and stipend positions, including recruitment, hiring and evaluation.
  • Supervises the Cooperative Middle School Athletic Coordinator Stipend Position to ensure a streamlined approach is implemented throughout the Exeter Region Cooperative School District.
  • Supervises and directs the scheduling and contracting of contests.
  • Oversees the coordination of ticket takers, scorekeepers, security, law enforcement and other personnel for all events.
  • Supervises the coordination of all student activities transportation within the school(s).
  • Manages the approval, coordination and hosting of officials as needed.
  • Ensures all coaches have completed required state and local requirements including certification in CPR/AED, sudden cardiac arrest and concussion.
  • Facilitates required training and mentoring for coaches prior to their service for the purpose of protecting student athletes and ensuring all coaches are properly trained in district policy and best practices regarding athletics.
OPERATIONS
  • Creates, reviews, and distributes athletic handbooks for coaches and student athletes and parents.
  • Develops long-range plans for facilities and programming.
  • Determines when to postpone or cancel practices and/or athletic events.
  • Creates and administers an evaluation process for school coaching staff. Evaluates head coaches annually and requires head coaches to evaluate assistant coaches annually.
  • Creates and communicates emergency action plans and updates annually for all venues.
  • Plans and supervises recognition programs for student participants.
  • Maintains effective communication of all matters related to the athletics program with the principal.
  • Ensures eligibility of student athletes.
COMMUNITY
  • Communicates, collaborates and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, student, parents, officials, media and other related entities.
  • Coordinates the distribution of information related to athletic programs with the media.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with community agencies such as local health, fire, police and park departments related to health and safety of athletics and physical education programs.
  • Supports the relationship between school and the community by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior in all interactions.
  • Fosters support for the athletic program and school spirit among all on-participants.
  • Conducts information sessions for parents and constituents regarding rules, and regulations.
BUDGET & INVENTORY
  • Prepares an annual budget.
  • Monitors budget allocations, expenditures, and fund balances.
  • Ensures funds are recorded appropriately, expenses stay within budget and best practices are followed.
  • Manages the maintenance of all athletic facilities and equipment and recommends improvements and/or replacement.
Additional Duties
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE
  • Required: Valid teaching/administrative license from the State of New Hampshire.
  • Preferred: Certified Athletic Administrator and/or Certified Masters Athletic Administrator Association designation from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
  • Motor vehicle operator's license or ability to provide own transportation.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS
Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above, in addition to the following: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is regularly required to see, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employee must occasionally lift and move equipment and/or supplies. The job is performed for the most part in an office, gymnasium, athletic field and school setting, including in outside weather conditions. The noise level is that of a typical school. Mental demands requiring decision making, analytical and organizational skills in order to achieve work objectives, draw daily operational conclusions, solve practical problems, use computer technology and to present information for use by administration in making decisions.
