GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is a statewide opportunity for a seasonal internship with State Parks, Historic Sites, or Law Enforcement. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to work in a state park or historic site and receive experience while learning from professional staff. The seasonal employment period is typically from mid-May to mid-September. Some seasonal positions may begin earlier in the year and/or extend longer into the fall. The actual length of employment depends on the work location and the type of job performed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level. Fee, Maintenance, and Interpretation internships are aimed at undergraduates. This is a 130 hour, 4 week program. The hours are not required to be consecutive and are not required to be at the same site.
Seasonal Visitor Services Associate – Fee Collector:
  • Greet visitors, collect admission fees, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Answer visitor questions and provide pertinent information about the site, including interpretation and orientation of facilities and local points of interest.
  • Handle monetary transactions, which include fee collection and gift shop sales.
  • Responsible for cash register reconciliation.
  • Responsible for restocking gift shop shelves and tracking inventory.
  • Answer a multi-line telephone system transferring calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with general administrative duties, reports, and data entry.
  • Perform opening and closing duties, as well as cleaning and maintenance as needed.
  • Provide janitorial services in the building and will assist the Fee Supervisor with special projects and events.

  • Assist sites with special projects and events.

Seasonal Maintenance Worker:
  • Perform routine building, grounds, and landscape maintenance, minor carpentry repairs, painting, and mowing.
  • Assist staff in the construction, installation, maintenance, renovation of grounds and buildings, and preventive maintenance.
  • Clean and service restrooms, shelters, and buildings, and remove litter from grounds, parking lots, and other public areas.
  • Operate and/or drive a variety of vehicles, including light, and heavy equipment.
  • Operate various maintenance equipment, such as mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and other equipment required in daily operations. Utilize various hand and power tools.
  • Follow proper handling and safety procedures involving cleaning chemicals and fuel products encountered in daily operations, including proper Personal Protective Equipment usage.
  • Provide excellent customer service. May interact with the visiting public answering basic questions

  • Assist sites with special projects and events.

Interpretive Ranger:
  • Greet visitors and provide excellent customer service.
  • Answer visitor questions and provide pertinent information about the site, including interpretation and orientation of facilities and local points of interest.
  • Develop and execute interpretive programs for the district, such as natural resource programs, cultural resource programs, recreation programs, and youth programs.
  • Assist with special projects and events.
  • Assist in the creation of social media, outreach, and other non-personal content.
  • Responsible for administrating, restocking, and tracking program inventory.
  • Assist with general administrative duties, reports, and data entry.

  • Perform opening and closing duties and janitorial services and maintenance as needed.

Park Ranger:
A one-year seasonal park ranger internship with an option for additional years. Summers only. Aimed at Freshman to Seniors studying Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology, or Criminal Justice programs. This is a 480-hour, 12-consecutive-week program where you will learn:
  • The Ranger First Philosophy
  • Visitor Education
  • Visitor Contacts
  • Visitor Safety
  • Natural Resource Protection
  • Park Law Enforcement
  • Park Management
  • Revenue and User Fee Collection
  • Working relationships with other park staff.
  • Park Ranger Staffing Models
  • Principles of Search and Rescue
  • Administrative duties related to park operations and park law enforcement.
  • Park Patrol Techniques

Qualifications



PREFERENCES:
Preference will be given to students enrolled in the fields of Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology Criminal Justice, Outdoor Recreation, Tourism, Hospitality, History, Museum Studies, or other related fields.
KNOWLEDGE:


  • Must have excellent customer service skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any student who is currently enrolled in and attending an institution of higher education, and meets the minimum qualifications listed, is eligible to apply to the Internship Program. This includes vocational-technical programs, as well as, undergraduate and graduate programs.
Internship Learning Plan (Undergraduate-130 hours) - 4 weeks
  • 40 hours of learning maintenance, including water/wastewater systems, equipment operation, maintenance scheduling, building inspections, trail maintenance, and site maintenance.
  • 40 hours assisting in operational tasks.
    Customer service, accounting procedures, point of sale, traffic counters, fees and fee reports, concessions, and staff scheduling.
  • 10 hours of ride-along experience with law enforcement rangers, customer service, the scope of the job, public safety, and resource protection.
  • 20 hours shadowing the site superintendent in the areas of budgeting, project management, human resources, contracts and procurement, planning, and resource management.
  • 20 hours assisting the Interpretive Ranger, assisting with planning, marketing, and implementing at least two public interpretive programs.
  • The capstone project is to be determined. Subjects could include reservation statistic reports, public surveys, interpretive signage, wayfinding plans, and/or area natural resource surveys. The capstone can be a small park project during seasonal work OR a larger capstone project on your own depending on internship credit hours established.
  • Hours are not required to be consecutive and are not required to be at the same site.

State Historic Site Internship Hours (Undergraduate-130 hours)- 4 weeks
  • 20 hours of learning site preservation and maintenance to include historic structure maintenance, modern building mechanics and preservation practice, building inspections, and grounds maintenance.
  • 20 hours learning operational tasks, customer service, accounting procedures, point of sale, traffic counters, fees and fee reports, gift shops, and staff scheduling.
  • 40 hours of event planning, interpretive programs, and exhibit planning. Creating programs, planning events, marketing, exhibit planning, interpretive signage, and program execution.
  • 20 hours shadowing the site superintendent in the areas of budgeting, project management, human resources, contracts and procurement, planning, and resource management.
  • 30 hours learning collections management to include cataloging, inventory procedures, and database management.
  • The capstone project is to be determined. Subjects could include a collecting plan, collections inventory, exhibit plan, and/or interpretive plan. The Capstone can be a small park project during seasonal work OR a larger capstone project on your own depending on internship credit hours established.
  • Hours are not required to be consecutive and are not required to be at the same site.

State Park Ranger Internship Hours. Undergraduate - 480 hours - 12 weeks
  • 350 hours of ranger patrol shifts
  • 40 hours of customer service in natural resources
  • 8 hours of Ranger First philosophy
  • 10 hours of customer service
  • 8 hours of park revenue and user fee collection
  • 8 hours shadowing the site superintendent in the areas of budgeting, project management, human resources, contracts and procurement, planning, and resource management.
  • 16 hours assisting the Interpretive Ranger with planning, marketing, and implementing at least two public interpretive programs
  • 40 hours of skills training, self-defense, O.C. spray, incident command, report writing, boating patrol techniques, search and rescue, and other ranger-related skills.
  • Hours are required to be consecutive.
