Job Description


PURPOSE OF POSITION:


Under the direction of the Executive Director of Nursing for Behavioral Health works collaboratively with other disciplines and services to oversee care of patients in the CPEP, Inpatient Adult and Child areas provided by the psychiatric nursing staff.


AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides overall guidance, direction and supervision to the Behavioral Health Nursing Staff.
  • Knowledgeable of policy and procedures for department and regulatory functions.
  • Knowledgeable of the standards of nursing practice and state, federal TJC and other regulatory agency standards.
  • Knowledge of psychopathology, current best practices, therapeutic communication.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in principles of management and supervision.
  • Acts as a role model and mentor to the staff. Engages and integrates various nursing disciplines in patient centered model of nursing care delivery.
  • Evaluate daily operations of nursing units, focusing on potential problems and strategizing preventative approaches with staff.
  • Recognizes how own belief system, personal feelings, and prior experiences influences communication style when dealing with staff and patients.
  • Examines problem areas in staff interventions with patients, families and coworkers, and provides appropriate educations, guidance, supervision, and discipline as required.
  • Assures staff adherence to Regulatory requirements, standards of practice and National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of corrective action plans and ensures compliance with mandates.
  • Facilitates and participates in the implementation of continuous quality improvement activities and in assessing effectiveness of corrective actions and determining measurable outcomes.
  • Work closely with hospital administration to interpret hospital mission/vision statements so staff can communicate these to patients/families.
  • Maintains open communication with support services and other departments, as needed.
  • Investigates and follows through with occurrences and incidents and completes reports as required.
  • Provides notification to appropriate administrators in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Provides/facilitates debriefing for staff/patients following an incident.
  • Determines realistic and evidence based corrective action plans and monitors for improvement.
  • Initiates disciplinary action proceedings timely and in accordance with accurate assessment of competency of staff.
  • Determines and ensures safe staffing patterns as identified by minimum staffing requirements.
  • Assesses nursing personnel to determine clinical and administrative competence and assists in development through appropriate learning experiences.
  • Conducts competency assessment of staff under his/her supervision timely.
  • Provides onsite supervision of patient care provided by nursing staff to high risk. Patients such as but not limited to, those in restraints, constant observation or medically unstable patients.
  • Accurately provides hand off communication of incidents, census, high risk patients, acuity of units, staffing issues and other clinical and administrative issues.
  • Demonstrates commitment to continued professional development through participating in committee work, staff development, and attendance in continuing education programs related to Behavioral Health, Nursing Administration and membership in professional organization.
  • Attends yearly mandatory classes and meets required life and safety standards.
  • Adheres to customer service standards. Review customer service unit based results and provides appropriate corrective actions.
  • Actively participates in continuing Education opportunities attending at least one conference yearly.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
