Starting Pay: $85,000.00-$97,750.00 Annually
Experience Required: Experience equivalent to three (3) year full time professional veterinary medical practice in a similar setting (includes full time work in a zoological medicine internship and/or residency).
Minimum Education Requirements: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree.

Primary Work Location: Zoo Setting both indoors and outdoors.
Certification: Diplomate status in the American College of Zoological Medicine, or within 6 months of hire. Valid Oklahoma driver's license. Ability to obtain Oklahoma State veterinary license and Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs license. Category II Federal accreditation (USDA).
Other: This position is safety sensitive. It is subject to pre-employment and/or periodic background checks and drug testing. This position works around animals susceptible to specific respiratory diseases, thus is subject to annual tuberculosis testing and must vaccinate against Covid19. This position requires periodic handling of native wildlife therefore rabies vaccination and periodic protective titer check is required.
Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
- Maintain the health of the animal collection including preventative health, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, and necropsy.
- Oversee and coordinate animal acquisition and disposition; ensure proper quarantine procedures and pre-shipment health exams.
- Perform duties of a USDA category 2 accredited veterinarian including endorsement of certificates of veterinary inspection.
- Safe handling and proper documentation of pharmaceutical use including controlled substances and ultra-potent narcotics.
- Supervise staff including veterinary clinic coordinator, hospital caretaker and resident veterinarian.
- Mentor and assist with ACZM training of veterinary resident and veterinary students.
- Participate in interviewing, hiring, firing, and detailed onboarding of new staff.
- Participate in continuing education courses at a level that meets if not exceeds the Oklahoma state licensure requirement.
- Participate in internal and external activities to promote the Zoo or increase its collaboration with regional partners.
- Participate in Zoo activities, Zoo-wide events, tours of veterinary hospital, lectures for regional universities, and occasional philanthropic group presentations.
- Participate in research projects, review research and proposal requests, and collaborate with the Director of Conservation and Science when requested.
- Monitor department budget, be mindful of resource use, maintain green practices when possible, and participate in asset lifespan updates to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- May work within the commissary preparing animal diets on short notice when needed.
- Safe operation of vehicles used within the division.
- Safe operation of equipment within department.
