The Design Engineer - Clothes Care Systems COE (Center of Excellence) will develop in-depth product knowledge and to use that in work to advance product capabilities. This position involves the development of operational algorithms, cycles, and features, and implementing those parametrically through the practice of Systems Engineering. Effective Systems Engineering requires an awareness of applicable performance and regulatory requirements and ensuring designs support meeting those requirements. Systems Engineering also includes development of consumer facing information and documentation, such as product literature and product technical information to support product launches.
This position is an integral role in the design, development and implementation of highly efficient, and reliable washers and dryers with superior performance. The position will closely interact with other engineers along with other cross-functional team members to design and produce new and innovative products that lead the market. The use of skilled engineering analysis and judgment with a strong desire to exceed customer expectations in every way is paramount to position success. This position requires strong organizational skills balanced with technical proficiency. The engineer in this position will have substantial latitude for creativity and innovation in their work.

How You'll Create Possibilities

  • Function as a Design Engineer responsible for developing optimized solutions around cost, quality and performance within the Clothes Care Technology team.
  • Take new technologies identified from Advanced Systems and Systems Engineering work and provide the additional development needed to ensure those are implemented effectively as part of a New Product Introduction (NPI) program.
  • Develop and evaluate multiple design concepts with the use of engineering analysis, rapid prototyping techniques and general hands-on skills.
  • Test and evaluate GE as well as competitor models to identify best practices in design, manufacturing and performance.
  • Lead execution of changes through the NPI and C-Change process.
  • Perform project scoping work to formulate GE Appliances product configurations which would allow for meeting strategic needs (testing, prototypes build, cost analysis...).
  • Develop / Refine / Optimize key algorithms and implement those into the impacted parametric files to support ongoing product improvement needs and connected features development.
  • Work with the Software Team using the Agile development process to integrate parametric updates into software releases.
  • Work with the Design Robustness Team to support periodic regulatory updates.
  • Develop consumer facing information and documentation, such as product technical information to support product launches and product literature revisions / releases.
  • Support efforts to update current Engineering Test Procedures (ETPs) and identify the need for new test procedures. Drive ETP updates through the entire process.
  • Support Connected Data strategy for Clothes Care in areas which relate to / benefit the Washer Systems COE Team's initiatives.
  • Work with technical team, including Systems, Embedded Software, the Cloud Team, and others in the technical development of OTA (Over the Air) features.
  • Perform the Systems design, development, qualification, and implementation work required to bring new OTA features to life.
  • Interface and communicate cross functionally to ensure information is conveyed fully.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

What You'll Bring to Our Team
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements:
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
  • Minimum 3 years of appliance industry experience or equivalent.
  • Project leadership experience.
  • Proactive problem solver comfortable with hands on work in a laboratory setting to demonstrate solutions.
  • Strong computer skills - high proficiency in Microsoft products. Ability to grasp new systems applications quickly.
  • Ability to communicate technical & product feature information to cross functional team.
  • A self-starter who takes ownership and has ability to drive decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior Washer Systems experience.
  • Prior experience in Lua parametric programming.
  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of Laundry Industry performance evaluation methods.
  • Ability to design, build, and execute a test plan and clearly present data to a diverse group and openly debate technical issues.
  • Ability to quickly frame up a problem by developing a test set up with instrumentation, developing and running experiments, and providing recommendations.
  • Ability to work multiple design options in parallel and use engineering logic to narrow selection to optimum design.
  • Use statistical tools to identify real and meaningful changes in performance.
  • Resourceful laboratory and shop skills.
