Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
Our growing, dynamic in-house law firm focused exclusively on insurance Coverage Litigation is expanding its practice. The Associate Managing Counsel with Usery & Associates will be responsible for leading and managing a group of lawyers and support staff located in California and Texas and engaged in litigation on behalf of Travelers in state and federal courts. This will include assisting Managing Counsel with recruitment, retention, development and performance management of assigned attorneys and support staff. As a subject matter expert, you will also use your insurance coverage expertise and litigation skills to independently manage an appropriate number of complex coverage matters and deliver optimal results for Travelers.
While the preferred locations for this position include the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, consideration will also be given to exceptional candidates located near the Firm's other offices.

  • Lead and manage a group of attorneys and support staff within the Coverage Litigation Firm, including acting as backup for Managing Counsel in their absence.
  • Handle an appropriate caseload of complex matters, ensuring completion of initial case analysis, budgets, updates, summaries, legal research, pretrial reports, trial reports and other required items (all Best Practices) in a timely and quality manner.
  • Appear on behalf of the Company in both federal and state courts to argue motions and handle trials, status conferences, and other substantive and procedural matters in the litigation of insurance coverage disputes.
  • Determine appropriate legal strategies and positions, as well as action on litigation; provide advice on possible outcomes, awards and settlements.
  • Ensure that the attorneys and support staff provide outstanding advocacy to clients and achieves excellent results on own cases and those assigned to attorneys within the Coverage Litigation Firm.
  • Assist in managing the Coverage Litigation Firm to meet all financial expectations.
  • Ensure compliance of direct reports with the Coverage Litigation Best Practices.
  • Responsible for talent management, including but not limited to staffing, performance management, engagement, professional development and compensation.
  • Drive and promote a culture of inclusion, engagement, integrity, and teamwork designed to lead to successful and cost-effective results.
  • Assign cases and initiatives to assigned attorneys, matching experience, knowledge and skill level of attorneys, while adhering to specialization philosophy and established procedures.
  • Develop and implement strategies to address any identified development opportunities including prompt follow up and resolution of issues.
  • Conduct training as needed.
  • Maintain high quality standards and ensure excellent service to clients/customers by employing methods and strategies commensurate with the provision of high quality legal and customer services.
  • Conduct file reviews focusing on quality as articulated on Quality Management form.
  • Provide feedback and coaching to attorneys.
  • Assist with initiatives throughout the Coverage Litigation Firm.
  • Achieve desired results through effective advocacy and trial skills.
  • Ensure clients are counseled effectively through prompt and appropriate communication, sharing expertise and legal advice to clients and other business partners on legal matters and changes in the law.
  • Assist Managing Counsel in ensuring the Coverage Litigation Firm adheres to high ethical standards of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ensure assigned reports comply with all elements of Coverage Litigation Firm expectations.
  • Support and collaborate with Managing Counsel around the analysis and utilization of management information to drive performance and execute upon value proposition strategies, utilizing office resources and technology to assure a smooth workflow and cost effectiveness.
  • Complete and submit all required reports, time records, expense reimbursements requests and other materials appropriate to performance of job duties in a timely manner.
  • Understands the external legal, business and coverage environment and keeps current on trends and issues affecting our business.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Prior leadership and/or demonstrated informal or actual management experience preferred.
  • Multi-line experience strongly preferred.
  • Subject matter expertise on coverage issues involving General Liability, Property, Auto, Claims-made policies, excess/umbrella, or long tail coverage issues strongly preferred.
  • Experience handling complex Coverage Litigation in federal and state court preferred.
  • Admitted to the Bar in good standing in California and/or Texas or admission to the Bar in good standing in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, or Massachusetts with a commitment to obtaining a working knowledge of litigation practices and insurance coverage law in California and Texas.

What is a Must Have?
  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent International legal degree; graduate of an accredited law school.
  • A minimum of 7 years of successful law practice experience.
  • Active license to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required.
  • Valid driver's license required depending on the location.
