Position Information
The University of Chicago Medicine seeks an Associate General Counsel with at least five (5) years of experience with a law firm or in-house legal department, preferably performing legal services for hospitals or health systems, to join its legal team. The Associate General Counsel will be part of a team of attorneys responsible for UCM’s transactional, commercial and strategic relationships, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and related areas of practice. The right candidate will have experience handling complex transactional, regulatory and corporate healthcare matters.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of the Associate General Counsel will include, but are not limited to:
- Working on corporate healthcare transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic partnerships, and physician practice group transactions.
- Drafting, reviewing and approving services contracts between and among hospitals and physicians and advising on general corporate matters and entity formation.
- Analyzing and advising on laws and regulations applicable to the Medical Center and its affiliates, including but not limited to state and federal healthcare fraud and abuse, the Stark law and Anti-kickback statutes, the False Claims Act, and antitrust laws.
- Interacting with and advising UCM leadership on all of the above.

Key Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to the Illinois State Bar or ability to obtain Illinois license within one (1) year of start date.
- The ideal candidate would have five to seven (5-7) years of prior legal experience with a law firm or an in-house legal department, preferably performing legal services for hospitals or health systems.
- Must possess experience with federal and state health law and other legal issues related to the operation of hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers.
- Experience navigating complex healthcare organizations and a working knowledge of general healthcare and corporate matters.
- In addition to a strong regulatory foundation, solid experience handling a variety of healthcare transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic partnership, is critical.
- Good legal judgment, the ability to appropriately assess risk, and excellent communication, writing and analytical skills.
- The ability to work well with others, to handle multiple requests for services and juggle competing deadlines, and to be effective in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with HIPAA, HITECH, and other privacy and data security laws is a plus.
