As a member of the Central Engineering team, you will make an immediate, measurable impact on the pace of product development by taking the responsibility of post-launch design activities.
The Associate Mechanical Design Engineer will be able to grow their technical skills and engineering career by learning to become hands-on expert in a fast-paced sustaining team that supports Hypertherm's Plasma and Water Jet cutting platforms. Under the mentorship of senior engineers, the primary responsibility will be driving Mechanical sustaining projects that involve diagnosing and resolving technical issues with released products including, but not limited to product improvements, cost reductions, component obsolescence, and maintaining product regulatory & safety compliance. The role focuses on learning about the design and functioning of Hypertherm's systems and resolving related mechanical engineering issues in order for our customers to continue receiving high quality products.
Position Overview
Working closely with the Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, Quality and Regulatory-Reliability teams, this person will work on challenging sustaining engineering projects. Some examples are - addressing part shortages, driving manufacturing process improvements, and creating a better product for our customers. They will learn to create supporting documentation and to drive the engineering change process.
Responsibilities:

  • Act as a hands-on expert for mechanical subsystems within Hypertherm's Plasma and Water Jet cutting systems, CNC (Computer Numeric Control) and THCs (Torch Height Control)
  • Maintain and support released products, including making design changes as part of sustaining engineering projects. Manage potential alternate mechanical components to address obsolescence/ availability issues working with suppliers and driving the change management process
  • Assist with maintaining regulatory, environmental and safety compliance for released products.
  • Identify root cause with product issues, and drive the improvements or design changes
  • Provide feedback to Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory & Design teams with recommendations for future designs. Participate in NPD design reviews and learn to provide sustaining engineering insights.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional project teams including R&D, Quality, Supplier Quality, Procurement, Regulatory, Reliability and Manufacturing
  • Work effectively with MCAD designers, engineers, and technicians
  • Follow best engineering practice procedures and identify improvements in existing processes to facilitate efficient delivery of high-quality products to customers
  • Learn to apply sound and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments
  • Work hand-in-hand in a lab environment with critical lab technician support

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (from ABET accredited engineering program)
  • GPA 3.2 or above
  • Strong CAD development experience, preferably Solidworks
  • Sound understanding of engineering principles and concepts
  • Excellent Communication and Teamwork abilities
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong desire to learn and adapt to new challenges
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment

Preferred experience that differentiates you:
  • Advanced degree, additional coursework, and certifications
  • Prior engineering internships
  • Power BI experience
  • Previous relevant experience (coops/internships are acceptable)
  • Strong understanding of machine design and manufacturing processes
  • Engineering instrumentation knowledge such as flow measurements, thermal measurements, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems/software

$61,194.00-$101,992.00 AnnualThis is the base pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire.
Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors.
