Form of workResponsibilities 002314 The Associate Director (AD) of Laboratory Animal Services (LAS) will provide direct oversight of veterinary medical care for the university to maintain animal welfare and regulatory/accrediting compliance from (OLAW, USDA, and AAALAC). This includes a range of species including small and large mammals (rabbits, sheep, and swine). The position will directly oversee our veterinary technician group as animal training, USDA anesthetic support and biosecurity are at the forefront of the veterinary program.
The position will answer directly to the LAS Director and Attending Veterinarian (AV) and will support the entire animal care program. Additionally, the position will be a voting member of the IACUC and help. Remote working and teaching opportunities are available.
Responsibility Breakdown (Approximate): 75% - Service: provide veterinary care for university-owned animals and will serve as the Alternate Attending Veterinarian in the absence of the DLAM Director/AV. The AD will oversee quality control testing, development, and implementation as it relates to our PHS assurance statement, AAALAC Int. site document, as well as LAS standard operating procedures.
The AD will provide animal care, protocol advice, and veterinary support to the general research community. Additionally, the individual will serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The AD will provide direct oversight of veterinary technicians.
15% - Research and Training: The AD will provide research and training support for an ever-increasing number of animals and species. Support may include protocol development, veterinary consultation, and direct collaboration leading to publications and presentations are expected. 10% - Other duties, which may include teaching opportunities, internal LAS studies for the animal care and use program, model refinement or investigator-requested piloting CORE FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES: Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
(Do not delete, move or over-write this statement) Provide clinical (prophylactic, emergency) care to a broad range of species (rodents, rabbits, swine) Provide pre-, peri, and post-anesthetic support to USDA species (rabbits, swine, sheep, calves). This may also include aiding in medical or experimental techniques to meet investigator needs Instruct investigators on appropriate veterinary surgical techniques and perioperative care to ensure the successful outcome of their project and meet professional, humane care of animals. Provide and support comprehensive diagnostic and necropsy services for spontaneously occurring illnesses or deaths of animals (rodents and USDA species).
Provide direct supervision to veterinary technical staff in their follow-through of clinically supporting biomedical research animals on campus Provide recommendations for enhancing the management of the research Animal Resources. Develop cooperative dialogue with the staff for their suggestions and needs, so as to improve the University's research support services and facilities related to laboratory animal science. Professional and courteous oral and written communication skill set needed for individuals ranging from husbandry support staff to key TJU stakeholders Provide a routine review of all practices involving research animals for added assurance of compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.
Serve as a staff member of the University's Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Review experimental protocols involving laboratory animals. Encouraged to participate as an investigator or collaborator in selected studies to enhance the scientific outcome of the study.
Keep abreast of current veterinary medical and surgical laboratory animal medicine, as well as scientific literature related to issues of comparative medicine and pathology. Qualifications EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: DVM/VMD/BVSc degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school ACLAM board certification is strongly preferred Completion of a Laboratory Animal Medicine residency OR at least 4 years of experience with laboratory animals, the regulations, IACUCs, and directing activities of veterinary technicians and animal care technicians_________________________________________________________________________ CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION: ACLAM Diplomate strongly preferred Ability to obtain DEA practitioner license Ability to obtain state veterinary licensure _________________________________________________________________________ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 4 or more years of related experience working as a laboratory animal medicine veterinarian with a broad range of species (ideally rodents, rabbits, and swine). ___ Conditions of Employment Covid Vaccination is a requirement for employment at Jefferson for employees working at Jefferson's clinical entities or at the University.
