The Associate Dean of Students and Social Worker (Associate Dean) is a member of the Dean of Students Office (DOSO) staff and provides consultation and advisement on student mental health-related matters. The Associate Dean is the DOSO’s primary liaison to the Counseling Center, Student Health Center, and the Office of the Ombudsperson and receives case management referrals from these and other offices and individuals. The Associate Dean works to assist in the resolution of student queries and concerns regarding physical, mental, social, familial, academic, disciplinary, economic, and other areas affecting their matriculation at the University. The Associate Dean interacts regularly with parents, mental health professionals, hospitals and social service agencies, and various members of the University community. As a member of the Dean’s leadership team, the Associate Dean assumes responsibilities of the Dean in his/her absence or upon request.

The Associate Dean of Students and Social Worker reports directly to the Dean of Students and may receive referrals from any University personnel.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision

  • The Associate Dean is responsible for managing the daily operations of the case management program in the Dean of Students Office and the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
  • The Associate Dean manages the assignment of referrals to the Assistant Case Manager in DOSO and the Case Manager in Housing and Residential Life “HRL” (outside of those referrals made directly to HRL Case Manager) and provides case and clinical supervision and consultation to the Assistant Case Manager and HRL Case Manager to ensure quality of services and coordination of care.

Dean of Students Office

  • Assist the Dean in addressing parental questions and concerns.
  • Be available for crisis intervention that may arise in the course of regular working hours to manage or assist University personnel in addressing crises.
  • Facilitate psychiatric hospitalizations when appropriate and/or coordinate other treatment arrangements.
  • Interpret University policy regarding Students and make recommendations on policy changes as deemed appropriate.
  • Convene and serve as ex-officio member on the Student Assessment Committee.
  • Provide consultation, training, and advisement on student mental health related matters and available resources to the University community, parents, providers, and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports.

Case Management Responsibilities

  • Collect, evaluate, and record all facts pertaining to student cases.
  • Perform psycho/social evaluations in an effort to determine students’ needs.
  • Conduct short term counseling and provide continuity of care until student is referred and linked with appropriate services and continue to provide case management services as needed.
  • Formulate intervention plans designed to minimize and/or resolve problems.
  • Contact and collaborate with other University departments.
  • Initiate parental contact when appropriate.
  • Provide referrals to University and community agencies.
  • Periodically review prior cases to verify compliance and/or case closure.
  • Maintain factual case records and prepare necessary statistical reports.
  • Maintain a directory of community resources available to students.
  • Develop and conduct workshops and training sessions on crisis management for the University community.

Title IX Responsibilities

  • Serve as an initial contact for Title IX matters related to sexual misconduct and gender discrimination.
  • Reach out to complainants to inform of reporting options and resources.
  • Provide crisis intervention, support services, and advising.
  • Provide consultation to campus community on such cases.
  • Coordinate when needed with Law Enforcement, Equity Administration and Faculty Affairs.

Interdepartmental Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary responder for Canes Care for Canes reports. Coordinate response to include contacting involved parties, collect relevant information, assess case, and provide appropriate intervention and follow-up.
  • Facilitate information flow with identified students, departments, faculty, staff, parents, families, and designated emergency contacts regarding student cases and serious mental health emergencies as well as other student issues or campus emergencies.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to academic schools, colleges, and departments.
  • Assist students with social services needs including, but not limited to referral to community resources, and crisis intervention.
  • Provide periodic consultation for the Health Center and/or Counseling Center.
  • Communicate medical or mental health resources for students with financial and/or transportation barriers.
  • Provide support and guidance to University Troubleshooters on matters pertaining to case management and access to records, when appropriate.
  • The Assistant Dean provides consultation, training, and advisement on student mental health related matters to the University community, parents, providers, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist students in the readmission process following absence due to mental or medical related circumstance.

General

  • Participate in campus activities within the Division of Student Affairs (Orientation, Leadership Programs, Homecoming, Convocation, etc.).
  • Assume duty on 24-hour crisis response roster as needed.
  • Serve on Student Affairs or University committees as assigned or requested.
  • Perform other general or specific duties as assigned by the Dean of Students.

  • Strong administrative and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional written and communications skills.
  • Very organized and detail oriented.
  • Excels in a fast-paced environment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Mental Health Counselor.
  • Minimum of 8 years full-time professional experience; higher education experience preferred.
