Job Responsibilities
Assists in inspecting substructure of bridges for evidence of timber rot, concrete spalls and cracks, section loss due to rust, scour, settlement and collision damage from waterway and highway traffic. Assists in inspecting the decks of bridge structures for evidence of settlement, potholes, concrete cracking and spalls, timber rot, and washouts. Assists with determining whether the approach railing has been used and if so evaluates its condition. Assists in inspecting superstructures of bridges for evidence of timber rot, concrete spalls and cracks, section loss due to rust, scour, settlement and collision damage from waterway or highway traffic. Enters inspection data into database and generates reports for each structure, to include preparation of stream bead profiles. Completes the profile report; checks measurements against last inspection to determine changes to conditions. Maintains files for each structure within the district and collects field data in compliance with SCDOT requirements and specifications. Edits recommended repairs to bridge deficiency report. Assists in the use of micrometers and increment borers to check for section loss. Uses GPS to update bridge locations. Ensures preventative maintenance is performed on all bridge inspection equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and touch-up painting. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
Physical Requirement: Work is performed with exposure to roadway traffic, inclement weather, insects, work in chest high water and other unfavorable conditions, etc. Must be available for emergency work at night, on weekends and holidays. Must be able to enter confined spaces in accordance to OSHA Guidelines. Physical skills include walking, standing, sitting, climbing, reaching and heavy lifting. Work environment is outdoors in extremely hot and cold temperatures. Must possess the ability and dexterity to work at extreme heights (over 300'), climb, walk, and/or crawl on top of/or under structures in changing and adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lfit 100 lbs. Works overtime, as necessary.
