The Department of Respiratory Care, in the College of Health Sciences at Boise State University, invites applications for a 9-month, tenure track faculty member (open rank). This position has been designed as an in-person position, located in Boise, Idaho. However, there may be room for the negotiation of a hybrid working model depending on candidate fit, existing research agenda and resources, and/or other scheduling needs. This position is eligible for the Merrick Endowed Professorship, the purpose of which is to support the development and implementation of the faculty member's interest in interdisciplinary biomedical and/or clinical and translational research in the areas of Respiratory Care, cardiopulmonary/respiratory physiology, or closely related field. The Merrick Endowed Professorship is a 5-year award that is renewable, the terms of which are briefly described below.

Overview of the Department:

The Department of Respiratory Care offers three programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). At the undergraduate level, the department is home to an Entry-Level BSRC Program that qualifies students for the credential-earning examinations of the National Board for Respiratory Care. The department also offers an online RRT to Bachelor of Science Degree Advancement Program (DAP) for RRTs who have earned an Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution. At the graduate level, the department offers an online MSRC Degree Program for RRTs who hold a valid credential and a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. The department is housed in the School of Allied Health Sciences, which also houses Kinesiology, Radiologic Sciences, and Genetic Counseling programs. The School of Allied Health Sciences is one of four schools in the College of Health Sciences that also includes the Schools of Nursing, Social Work, and Public & Population Health.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instruction

At a minimum, this candidate will teach in both the Bachelor of Science (BSRC) entry-level program and the online Master of Science in Respiratory Care (MSRC) programs. As such, the right candidate will be a content expert for select courses within the programs and will be responsible for the curation of content for both synchronous and asynchronous delivery in the online environment or in person. They will develop and maintain assigned courses using appropriate educational tools and the LMS (Canvas) and be responsible for performing quality assurance tasks every semester for face-to-face, hybrid and/or online courses. This includes providing input into curriculum development, student learning needs, and implementation of courses. The faculty will also demonstrate ongoing teaching effectiveness, best practices, and professional commitment to teaching in a variety of environments, evidenced by positive student evaluations and staff feedback. This can also be accomplished by participating in ongoing professional development in areas of teaching, content specialty, and certifications, as appropriate.

It is expected that this faculty member will:

  • Develop and implement at least one didactic or lab-based undergraduate course in area of expertise
  • Develop, implement, and/or facilitate didactic courses in the undergraduate research arc of the BSRC program
  • Develop and/or implement at least one of the following graduate courses in the MSRC
    • Advanced Pharmacology
    • Advanced Diagnostics in Respiratory Care
    • Applied Research Methodology

Research

Personal research requirements will vary by the candidate. Tenure-track faculty are allocated a variable percentage of annual workload requirements toward scholarly activity by the department chair. The essential teaching duties and responsibilities of faculty are assigned by the department chair. The rank offered will be commensurate with the candidate's background, level of experience, and professional goals. Tenure-track faculty members adhere to the tenure-eligibility requirements of the University.

It is expected that this faculty member will show evidence of progress in moving towards research independence and grantsmanship. Further, there is an expectation that the faculty member will demonstrate a keen interest in supporting interdisciplinary research and opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student research.

Service

It is expected that this faculty member will actively participate in school, college and/or university service, and respond positively to invitations to participate in departmental, school, or university-level ad-hoc committees as necessary. For those candidates applying for the rank of associate or "full" professor, mentorship of early career faculty members is expected. This faculty member will also be encouraged to demonstrate service to the profession through any number of means such as serving as a reviewer or editor for a journal, serving on professional organization committees, etc.

Endowment Eligibility

The Merrick Endowed Professor is a leader in the fields of Respiratory Care, cardiopulmonary sciences/physiology, or pulmonary or cardiac medicine who is dedicated to the advancement of scholarly activity related to the field. The endowment is a 5-year commitment with the potential for renewal, which is dependent on alignment of research outcomes with departmental initiatives. Extension of both the endowment title and related funds are at the discretion of the Department Chair. Endowment funds are allocated annually and may be used to support a Candidate's research agenda, laboratory needs, travel related to research agenda, graduate assistant, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Cardiopulmonary Sciences, Health Sciences, Cardiopulmonary or Human Physiology and/or MD/DO with experience in a cardiorespiratory specialty and/or terminal degree in field related to Respiratory Care
  • Experience supervising and mentoring student research
  • History of scholarly publications consistent with rank/experience of the applicant
    • Applicants for rank of associate or "full" professor must have a history of executing sponsored projects.
  • Experience teaching in a hybrid and/or online learning environment
  • Demonstrates and maintains competence in area(s) of specialty or expertise

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A history of leading or collaborating in clinical and translational research
  • Experience with grant writing and extramural funding
  • Online teaching experience at the graduate level
  • At least one (1) NBRC (or other healthcare-related) specialty credential/or certificate.
  • Clinical experience in Respiratory Care.
  • Experience with a Learning Management System, such as Canvas

The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Demonstrated advanced level of oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, articulate, and assess course learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in creating course materials (syllabus, handouts, presentations, etc.) which enhance student interest and engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage effective, friendly, and civil working relationships with university and community members.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality work while working independently or leading a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Salary and Benefits:

The budgeted 9-month base salary for this position is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate. Annual endowment funding of $30,000-$35,000 is available for a 5-year term to support or extend the candidate's research endeavors, which may be renewed at the discretion of the chair. Additional opportunities for supplemental pay are available if a candidate teaches additional courses, or extends research activity beyond the contract dates.
