Position Description
Peoria Area Command
Position Title: Assistant Social Services Director
Job Summary: In association with the Peoria Area Social Services Director, this position is essential to our local Social Services programs. They will provide overall leadership on the day-to-day operations along with general oversight of services to others all in support of our Mission Statement.
Reports To: Peoria Area Social Services Director
Supervises: Peoria Family Services staff to include the Food Services Manager, Case Managers, and the Front Desk Receptionist.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others.
Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry and annual motor vehicle check with a valid driver's license.
Education:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in social work, sociology, criminal justice or other related field.Other candidates will need a minimum of five years' experience in human service field with a social service organization to be considered.

Experience:
Individual must have specific knowledge and work experience related to Social Services administration and standard practices related to working with at-risk populations. Additionally, knowledge and skills related to human behavioral and mental health interventions, crisis management, the fiscal management and reporting requirements of State and Government funded programs are essential. Experience is preferred in working with homeless prevention and rapid rehousing programs.
The incumbent of this position must be willing to become familiar with and support the mission of The Salvation Army. Three to five years' experience supervising, developing, and training others; staff and volunteers is essential.

  • Ability to manage people and projects successfully efficiently and effectively.
  • Team player, self-starter, and perform well with minimal supervision.
  • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Ability to establish policies and procedures, holding others accountable to the same.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.
  • Demonstrated awareness of budget resources and cost control, as well as planning and administering budgets.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including demonstrated experience in using email, MS Office applications, Internet, and Social Media platforms.
  • Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary in emergent situations.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • In association with the Peoria Area Social Services Director, provides overall leadership, direction, and collaboration to those coordinating services in social ministries and to individuals and groups within the local community. Directs staff in proper protocol and care when working with others.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of local Social Services programs and provide future recommendations for growth and development.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and recommends process improvements to meet community, quality, safety, and risk management guidelines.
  • In association with the Peoria Area Social Services Director, provides support, builds local relations, and represent partnerships within the community. Participates in community meetings as appropriate.
  • Analyzes community needs and related services offered on behalf of The Salvation Army; reviewing and recommending outreach initiatives to ensure consistent services are offered to all.
  • Continually reviews program effectiveness and implements needed improvements.
  • Collects data and other information to evaluate program impacts. Ensure reporting statistics comply as expected.
  • In association with the Social Services Director and Finance teams, administers budgets. Manages financial resources effectively.
  • In coordination with the Development Department, prepares and distributes public relation materials and professionally represents The Salvation Army within the community.
  • Implements and holds others accountable to management and operation policies.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates staff, performance, recommendations, transfers, and disciplinary action. Ensures accurate staffing levels are maintained to effectively provide community services.
  • Resolves concerns with those served. Develop, implement, and host client-based forums.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere through appropriate conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional and appropriate communication practices.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army's "Safe from Harm" Certification and other related legal training requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as related to the general oversight of the Peoria Area Social Services programs and people.

Travel may be required.
Position Ranking:
  • Regular Full Time, Exempt

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:
This Position is required to do basic business and office work. To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to talk and listen, stand, walk, sit, and use hands. Individual must be able to regularly lift to 30 pounds and occasionally lift fifty pounds. The use of Office and Computer Equipment is necessary. Vision abilities will require close vision. Work may be performed indoors and occasionally require outdoors to attend meetings. There is low to moderate noise level for this position.
