Job Description:

The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English specializing in Children's Literature to begin fall 2024. In conjunction with our new Interdisciplinary Research Building, UTEP is developing research hubs to connect scholars across campus around the following foci: Bilingualism, Environmentalism, Health Disparities, and Digital Humanities. Accordingly, we are looking for candidates with an interdisciplinary research agenda that includes one of the following areas of expertise: bilingualism, translingualism, community literacies, critical literacy development, multimodal studies, multimodality and digital literacy, genre studies (e.g., graphic novels, non-fiction, poetry, oral history), LGBTQIA and gender studies, literary and reading theories, trauma studies or Social-Emotional Learning, environmentalism and climate change, scientific literacy development, disability studies, race studies, or the history of children's literature. We are interested in scholars with outstanding research promise and an emerging record of research, particularly those with experience in grant writing and who are prepared to seek extramural funding for interdisciplinary collaborations.

In addition to pursuing an active research agenda, the successful candidate will teach courses that contribute to our department's undergraduate and graduate curricula in Literature, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, and English Education. While our undergraduate courses serve mostly preservice teachers, our graduate courses comprise practicing teachers and students in our other graduate programs. Some experience as a K-6 educator is desirable, as is experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and graduate level and/or working with linguistically diverse students. We seek a faculty member who shares the university's commitment to providing an excellent education for all students.

Requirements:

Ph.D. in English Education, English, Rhetoric, Library Science, or Comparative Literature by August 31, 2024. Active research agenda and strong commitment to teaching first-generation students at a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
