This tenure track position will directly support the Professional Writing & Communication major and undergraduate certificate in Professional Writing. The faculty member may teach courses such as copy editing, journalism, grammar, technical writing, new media, and business writing, in addition to composition courses. Courses will be offered in a range of delivery modes, including in-person as well as synchronous and asynchronous online.
  • This position will maintain an active research agenda, including conducting and publishing research in their area of expertise.
  • The person in this position will be expected to participate in departmental activities (meetings, committee representation, assessment, program evaluation, recruitment) regularly.
  • Duties also include student advising, contribution to student growth and development, evaluating student performance, student recruitment to English program, scholarly activity, and service to the University community. SMSU, in its commitment to meeting the service needs of the region, expects faculty to engage in regional service, education or study as part of their community service responsibility.

Required Qualifications
  • Applicants must have a terminal degree (PhD) in Technical and Professional Communication, Rhetoric, Writing Studies, or a closely related area.
  • Must have college teaching experience with composition and technical writing.
  • Must have demonstrated excellence in teaching through multiple modalities.
  • Demonstrated commitment or proven strategies for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment and demonstrated ability or proven strategies to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds are required.
  • The successful candidate must be able to travel, work well with various on- and off-campus constituencies, communicate clearly, be organized and attentive to detail, and be a team player.
  • Collegiality within the department is highly desirable, as well as willingness to work with the department's Writing Committee to meet assessment and curriculum requirements.
  • Must have an understanding of and appreciation for liberal education.
  • Must have a student-centered approach to education and a commitment to helping grow the English program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated abilities/ competence in instructional technology and commitment to interdisciplinary education is preferred.
  • Ability to mentor students who seek careers in technical writing, professional writing, or publishing.
  • Professional experience in technical writing, science writing, professional writing, grant writing, editing and publishing or journalism.
