About The University of Texas at El Paso:

UTEP is a Carnegie R1 and Community Engaged research university at the heart of the U.S.-Mexico border region whose mission is that of increasing access to excellent higher education. UTEP is America's leading Hispanic-serving university. Located at the westernmost tip of Texas, where three states and two countries converge along the Rio Grande, we advance discovery of public value and positively impact the health, culture, education, and economy of the community we serve. Eighty-four percent of our students are Hispanic, and half of our undergraduates are the first in their families to go to college. Deeply woven into the University's character are the distinctive strengths of the people whom we serve. At UTEP, our 24,000 students have access to 169 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs. Located in the second-most educated city in Texas, UTEP is recognized as one of the best research universities in the country for connecting students with the community around them. El Paso County is a highly livable, bi-cultural community of 800,000 people, which offers affordable homes and attractive neighborhoods.

The University's rapidly growing research portfolio in the sciences, engineering, health fields, and other areas ranks UTEP fourth in federal research expenditures among the public universities in Texas. UTEP will facilitate the success of new faculty members by providing a strong network of neuroscience faculty, excellent resources for student trainees, and excellent facilities for conducting Behavioral Neuroscience research. UTEP has a collaborative network of 14 neuroscience faculty. The UTEP Border Biomedical Research Center (BBRC), supported by the National Institutes of Health Research Centers in Minority Institutions (NIH RCMI) Program, provides analytical, experimental, and infrastructural support through state-of-the-art core facilities to UTEP biomedical researchers. Importantly, UTEP has aggressively expanded biomedical research opportunities in recent years through the development of a new building focused on interdisciplinary research, a new NIH-funded Imaging and Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory, development of a Center for Integrative and Translational Research that supports the integration of basic and clinical research initiatives, and enhanced research collaborations with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso.

The Psychology Department has 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty members. We have an active Ph.D. program and a vibrant research environment. In addition to the concentration in Behavioral Neuroscience in Psychology, there are concentrations in Health Psychology, Social and Cultural Psychology, Legal Psychology, Bilingualism Language & Cognition, and a master's program in Clinical Psychology, offering a diversity of research perspectives and ripe opportunities for collaboration. Several investigators are working on issues related to motivated behavior and substance use at different levels of analysis.
