Position Description

The Department of Film and Theatre at San Jose State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the area of Film and Television Production and post-production with strong technical knowledge. Skills should include some combination of the following: film editing, compositing, visual effects, color correction/grading, directing, lighting, or other elements of technical Production and post-production. The department seeks a well-rounded candidate with professional and/or teaching experience in television or film production. Those with experience in storytelling that addresses historically underrepresented perspectives are especially encouraged to apply. And, ideally, the candidate would have interest in research and teaching opportunities with other units in the College, such as our award-winning Animation program.

Demonstrated experience in teaching is especially valued. We expect the candidate to know traditional, contemporary, and emerging methods and technologies in Film and Television Production and post-production. The applicant should understand the theory, practice, and technical demands of film / Television Production, and have a well-articulated vision regarding the field and how it should be taught. The candidate is also expected to be familiar with some or all of the following: Adobe Premiere, Avid, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, and Da Vinci Resolve software.

Required Qualifications

  • MFA in Film Production, or degree in related field with professional experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with others in a small dynamic department. 
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience. 
  • Undergraduate level teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated success in professional-level entertainment industry experience. 
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in production or post-production for Film and/or television. 
  • Commitment to addressing equity gaps in the field of Film and Television
  • Commitment to the values of social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and teach introductory and advanced level courses in Production and post-production in Film and Television
  • Advise and mentor students.
  • Participate in student recruitment.
  • Develop and promote new Production and post-production courses.
  • Perform committee and other service at the department, college, and university levels. 
  • Develop and sustain an ongoing record of professional engagement, including research and/or creative activities. 
  • Incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works. 
  • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
