Title: Assistant Press Secretary Level: 1208
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under direct supervision of the Director of Communications, assists in media outreach for the purpose of promoting Park District facilities, programs, events and other initiatives. Develops and distributes press materials, creates content for District social media platforms, including messaging and images. Assists with coordinating and executing press events. Works with Communications staff to develop ideas and provide guidance on video projects. Serves as one of the District spokespersons. Performs a variety of professional duties in addition to administrative tasks as required.

DESIRABLE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations or related field and two to three years' experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent writing skills and the ability to work in diverse settings. Experience with a community-based agency or program is recommended. Work with newsrooms and interview booking is required. Bi-lingual is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of contemporary public relations practices, including professional social media experience. Knowledge of public policy principles and practices. Ability to research information and prepare written and oral materials. Strong interpersonal skills to coordinate with field personnel and community groups. Creative writing and editing skills. Flexible availability to cover events and programs. Photography and video editing skills to support media outreach. Microsoft Office computer skills.

- Research information related to current news topics.
- Identifies potential news stories and pitches to local and national press to increase the agency's media presence.
- Gathers media clips and distributes to internal distribution list.
- Assists Communications team with coordinating media events including press conferences, photo opportunities and media interviews. Drafts external and internal messaging. Provides communications support for District's executive team to ensure consistency in District messaging.
