POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Manager of the Golf Course is actively involved in the comprehensive maintenance and management of the Golf and Grounds Department at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. Collaborating closely with the Golf Course Manager, this role plays a crucial part in scheduling and supervising day-to-day agronomic operations to maintain an aesthetically pleasing and safe work environment.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Assist the Manager of the Golf Course in ensuring that the Golf Course meets daily expectations.
- Ensure the grounds are in pristine condition for all events, exceeding customer expectations for the Golf Course.
- Perform data entry related to labor tracking, weather, and plant growth to identify more efficient and sustainable management and agronomic practices.
- Recruit, acquire, and train a high-quality seasonal labor force.
- Coordinate and execute projects in collaboration with the Senior Manager and Senior Technician.
- Supervise and train staff in the safe, efficient, and practical use of standard Golf Course and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Assist, in conjunction with the Grounds Manager or Chemical Supervisor, in developing and implementing a chemical program for bentgrass greens, tees, fairways, as well as bluegrass/fescue rough. Oversee a safe and proper application process with detailed record-keeping.
- Conduct routine scouting to identify irrigation, disease, and other agronomic issues.
- Assist, working with the Grounds Manager or Irrigation Technician, in moisture management for expected conditioning.
- Collaborate with Mechanics to ensure all equipment operates safely and properly, preparing equipment for daily use and storage.
- Manage all necessary turf repairs following events and proactively prevent damage before events.
- Assist the Manager of Horticulture in planting and maintaining flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Substitute for the Manager of the Golf Course in their absence and lead weekend Golf Course staff when applicable.
- Participate in local, state, and national trade organizations and leadership training programs.
- Exhibit characteristics of a team player, supportive cohort, and possess a growth mindset.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Supervisory Responsibilities
- No direct reports but will supervise and follow up with seasonal employees on daily tasks.
Education
- Preferred candidates graduated with a certificate, a 2-year, or a 4-year college degree in Sports Management, Turf Science Management, Horticulture Management, or related field.
Skills/Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of golf or grounds maintenance experience.
- Experience in the safe, mechanical operation of equipment related to the daily operation of Golf Course and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Knowledge of the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500.
- Knowledge of the game of golf and associated etiquette.
- Must be able to obtain Class 3B Certified and Licensed Applicator program by the Office of the Indiana State Chemist within 90 days of start.

Travel/Work Hour/Flexibility
- Monday-Friday plus some weekends and overtime as needed depending on season.
- Longer hours and weekends required for the Month of May and during the golfing season.
