JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant I-HSE is responsible for the planning and coordination of the facilities environmental health and safety programs requiring application of loss control principles and technology to analyze and control conditions contributing to environmental deficiencies, occupational hazards and diseases, reporting and projects as assigned.
The Assistant I-HSE manages the continuous improvement in the Environmental, Health and Safety process for a manufacturing facility of 100+ employees. This person trains, coaches and leads personnel in the use of Risk Control/Risk Reduction principles and methodologies to provide a safe, healthy and environmentally sound workplace. The responsibility of ensuring compliance with Company, OSHA, State and Federal regulations and standards is inherent to this position. This person communicates with other company owned facilities; including corporate EH&S managers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:• Comply with Company Safety Policies and Procedures
• In depth understanding and application of the Company Safety Consequences Policy
• Ensure and evaluates adherence to the Injury and Illness Prevention Program,
Near Miss reporting, Safety Concern reporting, Good Catch observations, Take 5, Permit to Work, Root Cause, etc.
• Coordinates the training of personnel in the required certifications such as, LOTO, Fall Protection, Hearing Conservation, Powered Industrial Wheel Equipment, proper use and application of PPE, Emergency Evacuation, etc., Maintains all training materials and certification records. Ensures training and certifications are current
• Perform safety orientation as part of the new hire orientation meetings
• Works with first-line supervisors to design job specific safety training and
ensure delivery
• Monitors the Hazard Communications Program for the facility including accuracy and availability of SDS
• Conducts monthly safety committee meetings; ensure cross functional participation across all shifts
• Coordinates with corporate environmental to assure new and current operations are properly permitted and compliance with permits is carried out
• Processes all Workers' Compensation claims
• Works with the facilities Workers' Compensation carrier for loss runs and claims management
• Supervises incident reporting procedures and provides accident update reports to the Plant Manager and VP of Operations when necessary
• Regular attendance, timeliness and scheduling flexibility
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Excellent skills in writing procedures, notifications, risk control documents, JHA's and others
• Ability to train, coach, and guide groups/committees, as well as individual committee leaders
• Prior OSHA, EPA and/or PA-DEP training/knowledge is preferred
• Well organized in recordkeeping, task management and committee/sub-committee management
• Ability to interact effectively with various levels within the organization
• Excellent organizational skills
• Must possess attention to detail skills
• Ability to be flexible and multi-task efficiently
• High-level proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, PowerPoint Presentation
• Must have excellent communication skills, with the ability to develop fact-based conclusions
• Ability to conduct oneself accurately, patiently, carefully, responsibly, quickly and alertly
• Must exhibit knowledge of health and safety regulations, always assess saf ety conditions, anticipate actions and reactions, as well as act in a safe manner
• Must be able to apply the Company Safety Consequence Policy when and if violations occur.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
The employee should have the following:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 1 - 2 years' experience in a relevant field
• Bilingual English/Spanish
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee should possess the ability to:
• Must be able to work split shift (to train off shifts on safety concerns and changes)
• Must be willing to allow 24/7 access, in the event of EH&S concern
• Must be able to work in a busy office and manufacturing setting
• Must have good clarity of hearing and speech
• Must be able to travel by car for several hours at a time to other facilities
• Must be able to use hands and fingers
• Reach with hands and arms
• Must be able to occasionally climb, balance or smell
• Must be able to tolerate oil, grease, dust, and occasional fumes
• Prolong standing or in stationary position
• Complete repetitive movements such as typing
• Be exposed to sounds or noise levels that maybe uncomfortable
• Complete repetitive movements
• Wear all required personal protective equipment (hearing, vision and hardhat protection)
• Lift/move/transport items up to 50 pounds
• Ability to move or traverse about the facilities
• Must be able to ascend/descend stairs or ladders
• Ability to work around dust, chemicals, and other substances, and in various environmental conditions
