Assistant Geologist

A day in the life as a Wood Rodgers' Assistant Geologist

Working as part of a dynamic team of geologists and engineers, you will be providing support for research, planning, designing, and implementing critical water resource projects throughout the southern California region. You will be furthering your understanding of groundwater resources through the design and implementation of exploratory drilling programs and production well projects, as well overseeing the construction of these wells. In addition to overseeing the execution of projects, you will be applying geologic principles to affect real world situations. All our work begins and ends with data. Our initial research and final deliverables are intended to relay critical data to our clients through the preparation of hydrogeologic technical documents. With the support of our industry-leading GIS Department, you will be utilizing ArcGIS to evaluate data and geospatial trends to relay a fundamental understanding of the groundwater resource for our clients.

What you'll learn

The first thing you will learn is that no two days are similar. Each project brings unique and challenging aspects that require continued engagement and consumption of information, regulations, standards, and industry guidance. However, there are few things you can count on:

• Understanding of groundwater principles and clear understanding of how to apply hydrogeologic principles to characterize and assess groundwater systems.
• Conducting field investigations, such as overseeing drilling activities and the design and installation of monitor wells and production wells. (We often assess geologic formations over 1,000 feet in depth).
• Compiling and evaluating historical groundwater data to identify trends (water quality/groundwater levels),
• Conducting geologic and hydrogeologic literature research.
• Preparing or evaluating geologic cross-sections, hydrogeologic conceptual models, water level data and contours, well and aquifer testing data, and water budgets.

Of course, you also get to collect soil and groundwater samples, observe and document the construction of wells, perform well and aquifer testing, and work directly with clients and a variety of engineering disciplines.

What you should know

Our compensation structure consists of hourly pay with paid overtime hours. On an occasion, field work may require overnight and weekend work to support drilling projects. It is anticipated that the Assistant Geologist would utilize 40% field and 60% office. All field work allows reimbursables for project meals and hotel stays (if necessary).

The ante

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or Earth Science
• 0 to 5 years' experience in hydrogeologic consulting with a desire for data analysis, report preparation, generation of exhibits and figures to relay geologic data.

Things we'd like to see

• Previous field experience and knowledge of water well drilling equipment
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Managing geospatial data using ARCGIS, AutoCAD, Leapfrog, Rockworks, etc. and aquifer testing data using ATEQSOLV or equivalent
• Ability to document field activities
• Good communication skills.
• Familiar with numerical groundwater flow and transport modeling using various modeling packages, such as MODFLOW, GSFLOW, or HYDRUS
