What You'll Be Doing

Working as part of a dynamic team of geologists and engineers, you will be researching, planning, designing, and implementing critical water resource projects throughout the Sacramento and Central Valley.  You will be furthering your understanding of groundwater resources through the design and implementation of exploratory drilling programs and production well projects, as well overseeing the construction of these wells.  In addition to overseeing the execution of projects, you will be applying geologic principles to affect real world situations.  All our work begins and ends with data.  Our initial research and final deliverables are intended to relay critical data to our clients through the preparation of hydrogeologic technical documents.  With the support and backing of our industry leading GIS Department, you will be utilizing ArcGIS to evaluate data and geospatial trends to relay a fundamental understanding of the groundwater resource for our clients.

Our work is conducted both inside and outside the office.  In the role of Assistant Geologist, you will get to:

Field activities may include:

  • Provide support during borehole drilling and prepare descriptions of drill cuttings (we often assess geologic formations over 1,000 feet in depth),
  • Review and interpret geophysical logs to characterize the underlying geologic formations,
  • Observe and document the construction of wells (we average 10 per year),
  • Perform well testing,
  • Collect groundwater samples and deliver to a laboratory for analysis.

Office activities may include performing geologic and hydrogeologic studies and other hydrogeologic and geologic tasks throughout California, including:

  • Compile and evaluate historical groundwater data to identify trends (water quality/groundwater levels),
  • Conduct geologic and hydrogeologic literature research,
  • Prepare geologic cross-sections,
  • Permitting support.

To a lesser extent, but with an emphasis on continued career development, you will be responsible for data analysis, report writing, groundwater sampling plans, and sub-contractor coordination.

Our compensation structure consists of hourly pay with paid overtime hours.  There are projects that require night shift work (on occasion) to fully document site activities throughout northern California, and to a limited extent, supporting our work in southern California.

What You'll Learn

The first thing you will learn is that no two days are similar.  Each project brings unique and challenging aspects that require continued engagement and consumption of information, regulations, standards, and industry guidance.  You will also learn that Wood Rodgers is unlike any other engineering firm out there - from the culture and camaraderie to the breadth of experience and disciplines we offer.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or Earth Science
  • 0 to 5 years' experience in hydrogeologic consulting with a desire for data analysis, report preparation, generation of exhibits and figures to relay geologic data, and client satisfaction.

What it takes

  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Driven to obtain licensure as a Professional Geologist/Certified Hydrogeologist
  • The ability to travel and work in an outdoor environment.

Things We'd Like to See

  • Previous field experience and knowledge of water well drilling equipment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS

We offer competitive compensation packages, a comprehensive benefits package, and opportunities for professional development and growth.
