The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America's #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for NYC Community programs.
- Learn the essentials of pre-program preparations including student communication and any on-site duties (agency meetings, food shopping, camp set-up, member orientation, volunteer events, etc)
- Learn to plan for crew logistics, including project management, food, budget, gear, and travel logistics.
- Coordinate/ implement environmental education & team-building activities
- Learn how to supervise/motivate students during service projects and recreational trips
- Learn to model appropriate camping and worksite practices according to LNT principles.
- Learn to complete risk management duties including the completion of the crew Emergency Response Plan, Job Hazard Analysis, and minor incident reporting
- Learn SCA Risk Management policies and practices including Taking 5, tool safety and equipment use, food handling, and hygiene
- Learn to complete program wrap-up & reporting
- Successfully completes SCA Crew Leader Training: Orientation and Work Skills.
- Submits bio to CLs to be included in pre-program letters to students & parents
- Assist CLs with pre-program duties: agency meetings, project site visit, food shopping, base camp set-up, parent orientation meetings, etc.
- Assists CLs with post-program wrap-up: work log, agency debrief, clean and return tools and equipment.
- Assists in the completion of ERP and JHA.
- Complete one non-emergency incident report (ie. tick reporting, minor clinic visit, etc.)
- Assists in managing crew budget- collect & manage receipts, fill out a budget form, etc.
- Plans and teaches (at least 2) Environmental Education lessons in the field.
- Regularly lead games and team-building activities.
- Models appropriate camping and worksite practices according to Leave No Trace principles.
- Models professional behavior & SCA Risk Management Protocol including Taking 5, tool safety and equipment use, food handling, and hygiene.
- Participates in weekly check-in meetings with CLs/Program Manager to give and receive feedback on crew dynamic, work project, crew challenges and highlights, and the apprentice experience.
- Completes exit interview with Program Manager & evaluation of ACL program, crew experience, and CLs.
- Current WFA Certification required (will be offered at training if applicant does not have this certification)
- Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: 6/3-6/16 (Hemlock Overlook Regional Park (Clifton, VA) which will include Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Orientation and Work skills Training.
