Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Director, Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Assistant Director for Queer and Trans Student Initiatives will have primary responsibility for the programmatic leadership and management for Queer and Trans Student development.
The Assistant Director will provide, in collaboration with the team, program development of the Intercultural Center and the Queer and Trans Resource and Advocacy Center (QTRAC).
The Assistant Director plays a critical role in fostering and promoting an inclusive campus environment for our minoritized student communities with specific focus on our Queer and Trans communities.
Ultimately, this will help to create a campus environment where students from all social identities can be successful and deepen their understanding of critical social justice.
The incumbent works collaboratively with the member of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and other staff and departments throughout the University
 

Essential Functions / Characteristics
Facilitation
Deliver Safe Zone trainings to students, faculty, and staff throughout the calendar year, including full-cycle registration form, running outcomes based assessments, and updating the curriculum of each workshop.
Develop and deliver additional trainings that explore the expansiveness of inter-sectional Queer and Trans equity. This includes exploring various social identities including but not limited to race, ethnicity, ability, socioeconomic status, national origin to assist our Queer and Trans Students in deepening their understanding of intersectionality in an increasing complex world.
Develop trainings for non-queer students helping them understand the compounding ways that intersectionality impacts the Queer and Trans experience in our current world.
Facilitate annual trainings to student employees and student leaders including Residential Assistants, Orientation Leaders, and Peer Mentors to equip the students to better support Queer and Trans people.
Facilitate annual trainings to professional staff and faculty members to create more equitable learning and living environments and work environments for our Queer and Trans Students.
 

Programming
Lead planning efforts and host the annual Lavender Graduation.
Collaborate in the Queer and Trans Living Learning Community recruitment and programming.
Manage the Queer and Trans mentoring program, the Kinship Collective.
Work with admissions to recruit mentees for the Kinship Collective. Recruit and train faculty and professional staff members to serve as mentors for the program.
Lead planning efforts for campus events related to Queer and Trans equity and identity development.  This includes workshops related to various aspects of identity development specifically for Queer and Trans Students like exploring various aspects of health care, legal protections, job searching, holistic self-care, etc. with the goal of promoting more informed, effective, and thoughtful advocacy for their Queer and Trans peers.
Support departmental initiatives as needed. This includes helping to plan and host events related to critical social justice and equity for various minoritized communities
Advising
Serve as one of the co-advisors to critical social justice related student organizations and clubs including the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) and Feminists United, a club focused on intersectional feminism.
Attend executive board meetings with students as needed.
Provide professional development to individual executive board members by meeting with executive board members individually once a month.
Attend weeknight and weekend student events.
Collaboration
Identify best and promising practices related to Queer and Trans equity to support the University in developing programs, policies, and initiatives that are inclusive of and uplift these communities.
Partner with various campus departments to provide consultation regarding Queer and Trans equity.
Serve on committees related to University diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts for various minoritized communities.
Partner with community agencies throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts doing work related to Queer and Trans equity.
 

Supervision
In collaboration with staff team members, post, interview, hire and supervise student employees.
Attend staff meetings and lead appropriate sections.
Attend divisional meetings and contribute when appropriate.
Prepare for and contribute to weekly one-on-one meetings with direct supervisor focused on personal and professional development.
Maintain, in collaboration with the administrative assistant, the Queer and Trans Student Initiatives University webpage.
 

Additional Functions

Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.

Preform other duties as assigned by supervisor or their designee.


Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in related field.
Two to three years of direct, full-time experience designing and implementing access and success programs for underrepresented students.
Knowledge and Understanding of the factors supporting the success of underrepresented students (Queer and Trans, students of color, pell-eligible, 1st generation).
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with under-served and marginalized students.
Demonstrated experience working and communicating effectively with diverse populations and creating inclusive and equitable communities.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Established record of building positive relationships.
Ability to think creatively, multi-task and work well both independently and collaboratively.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Available to work evenings and weekends and travel locally and regionally.
 

Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Higher Education or a related field.
Experience working in a higher education setting.
Experience advising student organizations and program implementations.
Experience developing and facilitating trainings and programs on equity, diversity and inclusion.
Experience leading identity development initiatives.
Demonstrated history of using equity, diversity and inclusion lens in delivering programs and services.
